Two Die In Second
Area Plane Crash
BLUE RIDGE, GA. - Die
charred bodies of a man and
woman believed to be a
Chicago couple were found
early Sunday in the burned
wreckage of a private four
seat plane that crashed in an
Isolated mountain area 22 1/2
miles northwest of here.
State Trooper Rubin Lyons
said the couple was believed
to be Richard Malec and Mrs.
Doris Malec of Chicago.
Three men, on a walk
through the rugged terrain
near South Cowpens Mountain
found the wreckage, Lyons
said. Officers removed the
bodies several hours luter.
"This is rugged country,"
Lyons said, "and the plane
cut through timber tops for
400 to 500 feet before it hit
the ground head - on and
burned. From a clock on the
plane and a watch on the
woman's arm, both of which
were stopped, we figure the
plane went down at 12:37 a.m.
on the 29th (Saturday.)"
Lyons quoted the FA A as
saying the plane left Chicago
Friday afternoon, presumably
headed for Sarasota, Fla., and
had not been heard from. The
plane is a 1961 model Cessna.
No one had reported hearing
the crash or seeing the small
woods fire it ignited, Lyons
said. He added tht the crash
scene Is in an area of ravines
and sharply rising mountains
at an elevation of about 4,000
feet and there are no houses
within several miles.
