Mason has proclaimed the weeks of May 6 through May 18 "Clean-Up Weeks" in Mur phy, and urges every citizen In Murphy a> uke part In this program. Clean-up week la held an nually In Murphy. The purpose' of the program la to beautify as well as eliminate fire haz ards. Homeowners and business men can call the Town Hall at 837-2510 for rubbish pick up. Rubbish should be placed near the street to help with loading. Only rubbish consist ing of brush, carton boxes, tin cans, old appliances, tires, etc., can be picked tg> during this program. The town can not haul away trees and tree laps. MURPHY EIGHTH GRADERS TOUR LOCAL FIRMS - Members of Murphy's three eighth gr.de classes toured several businesses, the library, courthouse, and First Methodist Church Friday morning, April 26, while other members of the class toured the state. The sixty-five students with their teachers, Mrs. Ruth Wilson, Mrs. Margaret Gibbs, and James McCombs, were conducted through the Murphy Power Board by Mrs. Beryl Fulton; at the Murphy Carnegie Library, Miss Josephine Heighway discussed National Library Week; at the courthouse members of the class were shown some of the old deeds in the Register of Deeds office by J. E. Graves; at the Citizens Bank and Trust Co., each student was given a penny with which to start a savings account. After leaving the bank, the group was treated to a 30-mlnute organ recital by Mrs. Emily Davidson at the First Methodist Church. Some of the students marveled at the pipe organ and the stained glass windows of the church. Next; the group visited The Cherokee Scout office and were shown the newspaper's press and other equipment. Scout publisher N. J. Babb explains how the paper is printed to part of the groig> in the above picture. Afterwards the students had a picnic and ballgame at the fairgrounds. (Scout Photo) Beautification Needed Murphy will soon have a modern four - lane western approach. The new four-lane bridge and highway, when com pleted, will add much to the western end of town. Tourists traveling U. S. 64 and 19 headed for the Great Smoky National Park and other points east, will enter Cherokee County and Murphy on as modern a highway as found in Western North Carolina. They will marvel at our scenic beauty and comfort of this highway. Then they will cross the Hlwassee River Bridge and the scenic beauty changes to a view that does not appeal but re pels. Tourists, on their way east, pass through Murphy fast enough now. The first appearance they have of our community is the hill confronting them after they cross the Hlwassee River Bridge. Work on the highway and bridge is now in full swing. The time has come for the shambles id be cleared away. Property owners on both sides of Hlwassee Street are urged to do their part and see to it that this potentially beautiful area Is made attractive to tourists and home folks alike. Murphy Fire Truck To Arrive In June MURPHY - The new fire truck, ordered by the Town of Murphy on March IS, la ex pected to be ready for de livery by the middle of next month. Charlie Johnson, town clerk, told The Scout that the agent for the fire appa ratus company telephoned this week that the truck la in production and will be ready by J une 15. The addition of the new truck will greatly aid the Murphy Volutteer Fire De partment. An American - La France fire apparatus with a CMC cab and chassis has been ordered. The pump on the new truck will have a capacity of not less than 750 gallons per minute while operating under pressure of ISO poinds per square Inch. The pump will be equipped with an electrically driven positive pump type pri mer. The pump will be equip ped with suitable pressure relief valves. The truck will be equipped with a booster type pump of flat design and will have a capacity of 500 gallons. The size of the sigtply pipe will be sirffldent to flow not less than 300 gallons per minute while the pump la taking suction from the tank. LOST AT TOE CIRCUS - The chlld*e boot ?il pulled from the mud at the fair grounds in Murphy following the afternoon show of the Uni ted Nations Circus, Monday. The torrential rain Sunday and Monday all but drowned the circus performers and members of the Cherokee County Rescue Squad, the sponsors of the attraction. A handful of children witnes sed the afternoon show with drenched parents. The night crowd was better. Some little boy or girl lost the boot shown above. Itcan be claimed at The Scout Office.
