ANDREWS LUCY laughter STAFF CORRESPONDENT f Fireman Receives Safety Award ?ANDREWS - Maurice Piercy, 42, a Southern Railway locomotive fireman, who spotted a rock slide inside a tunnel and prevented a serious freight train derailment, was honored U Raleigh on Thursday, April 18, with his union's international safety award. The plaque ijtcelved by Mr. Piercy is shown above. He was credited with preventing the derailment of his 16 car freight train when he spotted a rdfck slide in the Co wee Tunnel near Dills bo ro, on the Asheville Division of the Southern Railway. The incident occurred on J anuary 30. y Governor Terry Sanford presented Piercy a plaque and a monetary award of $250 was given by Ay M. Lampley, a union official of Washington, D. C. * Mrs. Maurice Piercy accompanied her husband to Raleigh and was present at the luncheon and presentation ceremonies. Other attendants included I. C. Andrew* Native Injured In Wreck ANDREWS - James Kay Stover, 39, of East Flat Rock and a native of Andrews, was injured on Thursday afternoon returning from work In a five car crash, near Henderson vllle, sending five to the hospital. Patrolman Dan Frady who investigated the accident said a car driven by Mrs. Shady Fowler was traveling north on N. C. 191 when she pulled from her lane of traffic Into the left hand lane, side - swiped two oncoming ve hicles and collided solidly with the next five cars. In the third car struck by the Fow ler auto, was Stover who re ceived broken right leg and ankle plus severe cuts and bruises. He was admitted to Margaret Pardee Hospital. Mr. and Mrs. J. W.
