Local Cancer Patients
May Suffer Due To
Lack Of Local Funds
SPECIAL TO SCOUT
MURPHY - The executive board of the Cherokee County
Chapter of the American Cancer Society met Monday evening,
July 8, at the Power Board Bidldlng.
After the financial report waa given it was found that the
local chapter was badly in need of additional funds for needy
local cancer patients.
The local funds have been exhausted due to the increased
number of local cancer patients fomd in this area.
An appeal is being made to the general public and con
tributions for this cause will be accepted through August 31.
Sigjport of this appeal could mean the difference between life
and death of a local cancer patient.
All regular and memorial contributions may be sent to
Mrs. Fannie B. Pull turn, Andrews, N. C? treasurer, or to
Mrs. Holland McSwain or Sam L. Davidson, Murphy, co
chairmen of the campaign drive.
By Mr*. Neal R, Kitchens
HAYBSV1LLS ? After a
heave and a ho, a grinding of
brakes, and achoruaof "Whoa
-aaa-a" the Wagon Train came
?> Clay County.
It gave me an oppornnlty to
get a first hand view of all
the "goings on." I went ?>
the camp the first night the
train was In Clay. It was In
the Tusqutase section, with
everything as orderly as a
family picnic. A rain had fal
len about an hour before I
got there. The fog was heavy
on all sides.
There was a clop, clopl of
the horses hoof a as they were
being taken to water. Some
riders were still saddle happy,
winding In and out of the
crowd.
Jim Armstrong, bar-be-cue
chef, was turning chickens
over ? long pit. During the
rain sheets of plaatlc and run
costs had basin bald bv Jim
and others while they a?k a
real aoaher. There was an
aroma of coffee from the huge
pots, simmering over the
camp fires. Home Demon
stration Club ladlea and
church groups were on hand
with all the home baked
"goodies" to feed the crowd.
Cowboy hats, tight legged
britches and boots was the
fashion of the train.
For about a quarter of a
mile along the road, tents
were pitched, and horses tied
for the night. Several thous
and people were milling a
round. There was a long
steady stream of cars on
the road filled with people
watching the camp.
I was Informed that the
wagons and main part of the
train was about a half mile
farther back. 1 wanted to see
the entire camp, so I head
ed "lg> country." I pa&aed
groig) after groig) camped a
long the roadside. In a large
open field, I found the Wagon
Train lined In a big circle.
This was a real thriller. Some
had camp fires going near
their wagons. Coffee was
brewing, and I actually saw
beans being served from the
open fire in tin plates.
A large grotg) had gathered
near one wagon. By squeez
ing through 1 saw the men
shoeing a horse that had throw
a shoe coming down the moun
tain. A young lad held a flash
light, while another sat on the
ground, and removed a horn
from his foot with a pin knife.
As I walked around the cir
cle, I watched the glow from
die camp flrea. A whlpperwlll
started "whipping". The set
ting was so real I hall expect
ed to hear the cry of the
Shoshone from the hills.
By the time 1 finished my
treck, the string band was in
full sway. Square dancers fil
led the road. This was inter
cepted by the sheriff
occasionally, to let the traf
fic through. Everyone was in
a holiday mood.
The Wagon Train traveled
about 9 miles to reach Hayes -
ville July 3. Approximately
five to six thousand people
n had gathered in town by 1:00
p. m. to welcome the group.
Boys climbed to the roofs of
buildings. As they called,
"Here they come," the
excitement that ran through
the crowd was like in elec
tric current
Capt. Frank Swan, Wagon
Master, and Clifton Penland
carried die flags on their
steeds In grand fashion as they
led the parade. It was a sight
that will be long remembered.
Wagons and horsemen mov
ing at a steady pace, with
everyone "diked" out In their
best riding "haUts."
The train circled the square.
Among the unusual riders was
"Aunt Maggie" Moore, age
94, riding with the dignity of
a queen. The train moved to
the school grounds to make
camp for the night.
Ladles of the V. F. W, Aux
iliary and Jim Armstrong
had food prepared for the
crowd. They were assisted
by members of the V.F.W.
In serving.
By night fall, approximate
ly 6,000 people were In town.
Two square dancer* got under
way at the school ground, with
ball room dancing In the gym
nasium. Another big square
dance was held In town. The
Sheriff, deputy and highway
patrolman milled through the
crowd, keeping everything in
orderly fashion.
The music of the string band
could be heard for miles.
Time was turned back and
frontier days were relived
again as old and young alike
"swung their partner" in the
traditional style.
The Wagon Train moved out
at dawn, July 4. As quietness
settled over Clay, many were
already hoping the train will
return next year. The people
on the Wagon Train and the
spectators shared a common
opinion - "THIS WAS THE
BEST WAGON TRAIN YET."
