Carolina MURPHY - Mr. and Mrs. Leon H. Talley received their Master of Arts Degree In Edu cation at the commencement exercises at Western Caro lina College, Cullowhee on the evening of August 16. The Honorable Roy A. Taylor was the speaker for the event. Mrs. Talley is the former Miss Clara June Hughes of Rt. 4, Murphy. She is the daughter of Mrs. Paschal Hughes and th late Mr. Hughes. Mr. Talley teaches the six th grade at the Lansdown Ele mentary School in Charlotte, N. C. Mrs. Talley teaches Business at South Mecklenburg High School there. Others receiving the Mas ters of Arts degree in Education were Charles Haw kins, of Rt. 4, Murphy, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gay Hawkins and a former teacher in Sylva Webster High School. William J. Hughes, of Mur phy, grandson of Mr. and Mrs. S. N. Bobo of Murphy, and will teach in the White Church School at Hanging Dog. He was a teacher there last year. Flowers may be entered on Monday, Sept. 2, from three undl nine p.m. Accredited judges have been obtained for the show and judging will begin on Tuesday morning. No en tries will be received later than Monday night. Tricolor ribbons will be presented for the best entries In both the horticulture and artistic di visions. Blue, Red and White Ribbons will be given in each class. The following classes will be open to the artistic di vision: Mass Arrangements; Dried Arrangements; Jap anese Arrangements; Ar rangements of Fruits and Vegetables; All Green Ar rangements; and Arrange ments in Modern Design. Flowers and fruits for ar rangements may be obtained from any source and the ex hibitor may use the container of her choice. Accessories are e premitted In all classes. All entries In the horti culture must be grown by the exhibitor and entries jre limited to one In each class for each exhibitor. Potted plants must have been In the possession of the owner for not less than six weeks prior to the show. The fair catalogue should be consulted for Infor mation on horticulture divi sions. Carolina To Sponsor Course In Murphy CULLOWUEE -- Western Carolina College will sponsor an extenslo n course In Murphy during the fall quarter, ac cording to an announcement from Dr. C. IX Killlan, director of extension. Beginning Thursday, Sept. 13, Or. Maurice B. Morrill will teach language Arts in the Elementary School. Classes will be held from 6:30 to 9:30 each Thursday evening at the Murphy Elementary School, and will be open to both graduates and advanced undergraduates. This course Is a consider ation of teaching principles. techniques, and materials in the field for which it is de signed. Special attention will be placed on the teaching of English with emphasis upon oral and written expression. Students will register at the first class meeting.
