Stewart County Extension Chairman Every livestock producer at some time has to be able to catch and hold his animals. He has to be able to provide a good place to feed and house his animals. There are many plans avail able for all producers who wish to have better livestock facilities. The County Extension Of lice has publications which will give workable plans for equip ment and buildings needed by livestock producers. One of these publications is made up by several universities and published by the Midwest Plan Service. This complete beef cattle plan book can be obtained from the County Agent's office at the cost of one dollar. | Another publication by the ' USDA gives some practical I ideas on equipment for beef cattle. This publication is ' available free. The North Carolina Exten sion Service has building plans for various types of livestock equipment including: holding chutes, corrals, and feeding barns. Livestock farmers needing plans to do a specific job can look at the building plans available in County Extension office and order the plans needed free of charge. ????? Cherokee County farmers might well take a look at their present feed supply to find out if they will have suf ficient feed to carry them through the winter. Total digestable nutrients in corn is much higher than in hay and on the basis of nutrients in corn producers can pay better than $1.50 per bushel and still make a saving over the farmer who purchas es $30 to $40 ton of hay. Pasturing of 13,400 acres or 15.8<fl? of Cherokee County's Planting Trees, Shrubs Before Hard Freeze Provides Head Start For Coming Year Planting trees, shrubs, ana evergreens before the ground freezes will provide a head start with next year's land scaping. Dig the hole large enough. Don't stuff a plant into too small a hole. Make it large enough to accommodate bare root stock without cramping the roots. With balled and burlapped material, allow an extra six inches beyond the wrapping. When filling the hole, firm it well to work out all air pockets. Leave a basin so that water will run to the plant instead of away from it. Then water the plant well. Turning the faucet pressure down al lows most of the water to soak into the root area. After filling the hole and watering thoroughly, prune the plant, whether it is a tree, shrub, or evergreen. Balled and burlapped material doesn't need such severe pruning as bare root stock. Pruning about half of the tops compensates for root loss during transplanting. It is important to cut back branches equally to retain the same shape as before pruning. But, cut just the side branch es. Cutting back the main branch or leader causes un desirable forking later. After pruning, wrap the tree up to the first side branches with commercial tree-wrap ping paper. This prevents sun scald, which in turn invites borers and other damaging insects. Sun scald is a real winter problem with newly transplanted trees. Then stake the tree to pre vent wind whipping. Roots break away from the soil if the wind whips the trees ex cessively. For added insur ance, give the tree or shrub a good drink of water before the hard freeze so that it will have plenty of moisture. Area Men In Service USS KITTY HAWK - How ard R. Coffey, airman ap prentice, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. R. B. Coffey of Route 4, Hayesville, is serving a board the attack aircraft car rier USS Kitty Hawk. Kitty Hawk, homeported in San Diego, Calif., is currently in the Far East as a member of the Seventh Fleet. While with the Seventh Fleet Kitty Hawk will visit such ports as Japan, Hawaii, the Philippines and Hong Kong. O erokee Scout & Clay County Progress, Thurs., Dec. 5, 1963 WALTER BRYSON OF MARBLE bagged this buck with an unusual rack of nine points on Panther Top Monday morning about 8:30. Woodland Pastures Not A Profitable Practice farm woodlands are causing farmers to lose a great deal of money in more ways tlun one. Using mountain farm wood land in this area for pasture will damage soil, destroy young tree seedlings, and lower growth rates of tim ber. Furthermore, cattle on woodland pasture gain weight slowly or may even lose weight. Studies were conducted in Western North Carolina where six yearlings were allowed to graze 145 acres of woodland from May to September for a period of six years. By the end of the first graz ing season, practically all the forage and most of the hard wood under story had been des troyed. During the third year each animal lost one and one-half pounds per day, and forage be came so scarce that the cattle required 60 bushels of corn and 1,500 pounds of cotton seed meal each season in order to have enough strength to range the area. After the six years of con tinuous trampling, the com pacted soil caused water run off to increase 90%. Soil loss increased from nearly nothing to 528 pounds per acre per year, and the woods took on a park-like appearance, caus ing the hot sun and dry winds to bake and dry the soil, creating conditions unfavor able to natural restocking.
