R.S. BAUIT Gonorol Contractor First "Wild Hogt'... (Continued from inalite) 19. 1894. died on March IX 1957, and is buried at the Fam ily Cemetery at the Old Hoop er place. His widow, Mabel Hooper McGulre, still 'tends' cattle on the raise at the Hooper Bald as did her ancestors over 100 years age. Her father, Sim Hooper, first Introduced Aberdeen Angus (called Black Pole by the nat ives) cattle to Graham and Cherokee Counties, about 1909. When the registered herd of cattle was unloaded at Andrews, in thcpreaaocetf a Urge crowd, a lady luddanly put up her umbrella and Ms caused a prize cow to lunge, fall, and break her hip I Or. Robert J. Orr, a skillfull sur geon, set the hip with a large copper pin and Mabel " nur sed" the injured cow for 3 weeks until she was able to walk and then took her 33 miles across the mountains to West Buffalo, the remainder of the herd having been driv en on ahead. My unoerstanaing is tnat now there ire four establish ed herds of the Russian boar in the United States, one in New England, the original one in North Carolina, one in Ar kansas, and the one in Cali fornia, which came from the North Carolina herd. The hogs that Tennessee has been cash ing in on the Uat for years (said Captain Swan) are the hogs that wandered over the state line from North Car olina and belonged to the herd that originally was planted here on Hoopers' Bald. The lodge that Mr. Moore built was purely for the com fort of visiting sportsmen and not for profit. It was for the purpose of bringing these Eng lish people who had capital to invest to the United Sates, for showing them this section of the country, and for enter taining them up there. There was no charge made for hunt ing at all. I was with Mr. Moore from early 1912 until all these in stallations were completed. It was my' duty at that time to transport the animals by ox wagon from Murphy and And rews to HooperiBtld It was also my duty to build the wire fences. The spill rail fences were put up at the same time. There was never any charge made for anyone that atagpad by there to gu a meal or to spend the night. The Hoopers' Bald area was, and still Is, so inacces sible that at first the only way we could get in was by pack train ? that is, with pack j horses and pack mules. After we got started up there we built a road from Martin's, uppermost farm and house on Vest Buffalo, to the top of the ridge at the Deep Gag but Ala road was so steep. Cotton often had to cut a good alMd tree and drag it MM his empty wagen when CfmlM down from the Hoopers' Ball in addition to locking the wheels with chains, because his mules and/or horses, were unable to bald the wagon la die road. This part of the read waa very rough and steep and on a return trip, the load limit was 1000 pounds for a four horse team. We always had to havefrom one to three teams of oxen attached to each wagon, de pending on the load It was carrying. from Murphy through Hanging Dog wid by Jupv Faln'a old place near the Mitchell Lick. ? wagon trail so that we could get In to Hoopers' Bald from out aide also. U waa Just a hadictf-wi, logging-type trail and om a reafwegoo road? merely a trail wide enou^i to get a wagon and team of ox en over. For a number of years .Mr. Moore s imported the refuge on Hoopers' Bald- After he moved to California he sent for Mc Gulre to visit him out (tor*. Cotton was gone about mo months and while he was there was presented by Mr. Moore with everything the owner had here In North Carolina, In cluding the animals. McGulre sold part of the animals to the state of North Carolina. The buffalo were sold to a man named B1U Moore in Andrews and were driven In through the forests the same as you would put a herd of cattle en the road. They finally were killed and eaten.
