district. I was die 4-H girl
to represent the Western Dis
trict.
The bake-oft was held at
the WUNC - TV studio. We
made muffins on television
and the $200 scholarship was
awarded to the winner of the
contest.

County, the winner, was sel
ected on the basis of record
books and muffins. The record
book counted TSflt and muf
fins 29& of the total score.
The project involved in this
4-H activity is Food Prepa
ration of which I have parti
cipated in for five years. Be
cause of participation in this
event, I have received many
wonderful awards and cer
tificates.
All of these awards were
given by the sponsors of the
corn meal mufiln actlfity
which is headed by Mr. V. E.
Vanderford of Raleigh. I have
made many new friends from
which I have gained some ideas
from them on the corn meal
muffin activity and they gained
some from me.
I made two free trips In the
corn meal muffin activity to
our State Capitol. Even though
I didn't win the State Contest
the trips have been very edu
cational to me.
I saw the capitol, the new
legislative building, the state
fair arena, the state college
and appeared on TV. This was
an education within itself.
The sponsors and staff of
the muffin activity are a nice
group of people whom I am
happy to Include as my
friends. My mother andfather
went to Raleigh with me and
they enjoyed their first trip
to our State Capitol.
Although I am too old to con
tinue the enriched corn meal
muffin activity I shall always
be an enriched corn meal
booster and look forward to
other projects in the 4-H Club
work under the leadership of
Miss Freida Dean Morgan,
4-H Agent, and Mr. and Mrs.
Patt Miller, 4-H Leaders, who
have been a source of com
fort to me in my disappoint
ments and In ray happier mo
ments in 4-H Club work.

Farmers would do well to
become familiar with ? pos

Basically, this change
means that the nutrient or
"plant food" content of fer
tilisers, as well as soil and
plant tests, will be shown in
the form of the chemical ele
ment (Phosphorus-P, Poos
slum - K, boron-B, ect.) In
stead of oxides or compounds
such as phosphorous pentoxlde
(P205) and potassium oxide.
The oxide form also may be
included for awhile when need
ed to help readers in making
this change in terminology.
Why make the change?
Briefly, the answer is to (1)
provide accuracy, simplicity,
and uniformity in expressing
plant nutrients, and (2) avoid
the great confusion In termi
nology that has arisen from
the use of out-of-date and
meaningless expressions.
The continuing development
of new high-analysis fertiliz
ers provides another sound
reason for changing to the ele
mental basis. There Is a de
finite possiblity that within a
few years some fertilizers
will contain over 100 percent
"plant food" if the P305and
K20 method of expression Is
continued! In fact, preliminary
research on such fertiliser is
already under way.
Is this a new idea? The Idea
of expressing nutrients or
minerals on the elemental
basis Is not new. It has been
discussed and endorsed by
many organizations, Including
the fertiliser control officials,
professional societies, and
some fertilizer Industry
groins.
In recent years a number of
other countries, including
Norway, Ireland, New Zea
land, and the state of south

ers who have retired or to
farmers who become severely
disabled. Payment can also be
made to farmer's dependents
when he retires, becomes dis
abled, or dies. Bcnflts can be
paid, however, only when die
farmer has the required a
mount of social security
credit. Be sure to keep re
cords of farm income and
expenses so you can file cor
rect returns.

sion. Scientists from these
countries indicate that the
change was made with ? mini
mum of confusion for dealers
and fanners.
How do we convert nutrient
values? Plant nutrient values
may be converted from the ox
ide expression to die ele
mental expression by using a
little arithmetic. Merely mul
tiply the percent or potwds of
the oxide by a conversion fac
tor and this will give the per
cent or pounds of the element.
Nitrogen is already expressed
on the elemental basis, no
change is required for this
nutrient (see chart).
Has a change been made be
fore? Test The method of
expressing nitrogen in ferti
lizer was changed to the ele
ment (n) beginning in 1916.
Until that time, nitrogen in
fertilizer had been expres
sed as ammonia NH 3. This
waa a logical move because
common fertilizers of that
day, such as sodium nitrate,
contained no ammonia.
This chaqge may not be ap
plied on die fertilizer bags
immediately. However, it is
almost certain that such a
change will take place within
the next few years. Presently,
technical writings in the
American Soceity of Agro
nomy are already being ex
pressed in the elemental form.
