Hawks, Rebels, Spark Plugs, and Wolf Pack, are looking forward to one of their best years. New officers for this season are: Marion Ennis, President; Dr. F. E. Blalock, Vice - President; Charles Delaney, Secretary - Treasurer; Joe Sursavage, Player Agent and serving on the Board of Di~ recotrs will be Harold Jones, Fred Liles and Houstin Led ford. There will also be three new sponsors who are equipping the teams with complete new uniforms and equipment. They are as follows: Sam Jones Realty Co., Nichols De partment Store and Citizens Bank and Trust Co. Owenby Mfg. Co., one of the original sponsors, will continue to sponsor the Hawk team with all new equipment also. To date 76 boys have singed up with others expected to sign up before the deadline on May 9. Any boy who will be 9 be fore August 1, or who will not be 13 before August X, is eli gible to sign up and may do so at Ennis Hardware Store. Try-out dates for all new players will be from May 11 at 4 p.m. at the ball park to May 14. On this date new play ers will be elected to their ; new teams. The roster will be i posted at the Elementary i School on May 16. i All former players will be* i gin practice on Monday, May < 18, at 4 p.m. Practice sche dules are as follows: Rebels 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.; Spark Plugs 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.i Wolf PacJt 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., and the Hawks 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. This schedule will be in ef fect only until school is out. The first official game will take place the day school is out at 5:30 p.m. Schedules of all games will be p>iblished at a later date. They will also be posted in various places of business. The team managers and their assistants for this sea son are: Hawks, Kenneth Trantham and C. H. Townsend; Rebels, Cecil Warren and L. B. Wommack; Wolf Pack, Lowen Truett and Lawson Raxter; Spark Plug, Jim Pal mer and Paul Hughes. All parents of Little Lea gue players are urged to sup port the program with their attendance, work and inter est and also asked to en courage their boys to anand all practice sessions and to be present for all games. Glad den, Community Planner for Andrews, was the guest speak er at the meeting of the Valley River Garden Club Monday, April 27, at the home of Mrs. William Walker. Mr. Gladden demonstrated through a story what com munity planning is and how it can be beneficial to the future development of Andrews. He then explained the various stu dies that are performed as a basis for a sound plan of de velopment. This was followed by a discussion of the And rews planning program and a question and answer period. Kartmans Honored At Housewarming ANDREWS - Mr. and Mrs. Sam Hartman, who recent^ moved into their new home^ were honored by their many friends with a surprise house warming on Thursday evening at 7:30 p.m. The Hartmans escorted the group through their new home. Following the opening of the 76 gifts, refreshments of cake and punch were served to the guests attending. Andrews FFA Dairy Team 1st In Federation Contest ANDREWS - Andrews High School FFA Dairy team plac ed first in the Nantahala FFA Federation contest sponsored by Clemson College Wednes day, April 29. Lonnie Postell, a member of the Dairy Team, totaled 541 points out of a possible 600 points which made him the lead student for the en tire federation. Other boys on the winning team included Otis Postell, Eddie Adams and Herman Swanson. Andrews livestock team. which judged the beef cattle and hogs, placed third in the contest. Choosing a theme, "Tender is the Night", a starry can opy covered the ceiling, a sim ulated ivy draped rock wall surrounded the scene and the stage became a garden. Terry Marr servedas Mas ter of Ceremonies, in present ing a variety show which trac ed "Tender Moments" front the Java era, to Cleopatra, to Napoleon, to Colonial Times, to the Roaring Twen ties, and on to the present with the Beverly Hillbillies and Beatles and Booties. The program included a skit, "Absent Minded Professor."* Following the program, the Xenials, a local dance combo composed of Skip Almond, Gary Breedlove, Larry Mc Inturff and Bishop Holder .pro vided music for dancing. The team's other activit ies include dancing at the Mountain Youth Jamboree in Asheville where they were a warded a trophy for their performance. They danced as an exhibition team. They have also danced for the Andrews Promanaders in Andrews and have received a letter of congratulations from Congressman Roy A. Taylor. The Family "Promanaders Plan Party At Hinton Center ANDRE WS-Plans have been completed this week by the Andrews Promanaders, the newly organized Western Square Dance Club of And rews, for a dinner party at the Hinton Memorial Center near Hayes vUle, N. C., on Monday, May II. The dinner will be followed by the weekly square dance in die assembly room at the Center. The dub was recently or ganized under the leadership of Jay Orr, Assistant Recrea tional Director of Government Services, Inc., of Fontana Vil lage. At an organizational meet ing held in the Andrews City Hall early in March, die fol lowing officers were elected: President, Mrs. F. E. Bla lockj Vice President, Mrs. Dan Hawk; Secretary -Treas urer, Charles Delaney. At the end of three weeks, membership was terminated with a total registration of eighty-three persons. Weekly meetings and dances are held each Monday night in the And rews High School Gymnasium. The Club la currently going through a twenty -week In structional period under the call* of Mr. Orr. At each weekly session a review of the preceding week's work, and new patterns are con ducted. The patterns are walk ed through for practice and then danced to music. At each meeting, refreshments are served by volunteer hostesses on a routing basis. In Memorlum In loving memory of Mrs. Sallle Kimsey Queen who passed away on April 18, 1961. The Children Patricia Moffitte Dies After 8 Month Coma ANDREWS - Mrs. Patricia Thomasson Moffitt, 32, a native of Andrews, died Wed nesday, April 22, at 7:30 p.m. at Sunset Hill Convalescent Home at High Point, N. C. She is survived by her hus band, Capt. David Moffitt of Fort Mcpherson, Ga., a daughter, Catherine Jo Ann, age 3, and father, John Henry Thomasson of Kelly, N. C. A graduate of Andrews High School and WCC, Cullowhee, ?be taught three years in the Winston Salem Schools before traveling aborad, teaching two years in Europe. While in Germany she married Capt., David H. Moffitt, later re turning to the states and took up residence at Fort Sill, OUa., where they spent two years before transferring to Anchorage, Alaska. One year ago whe came to Andrews to visit her grand mother, Mrs. Jo Ann Hollo way, who was ill, and was Stricken on her return trip to Anchorage with ence phalitis. she was flown from Alaska to Lerterman General Hospital in San Francisco, Calif., where she remained in a coma for a period of eight months. She regained consciousness for a short period of time and was later entered in the convalescent home until her death. Floral offerings from many states, including Alaska, ar rived at thelvieFuneralHome in Andrews on Saturday from friends, former students, and people who had met her in many walks of life. Services were held at the Valleytown Baptist church on Saturday afternoon at 3:00 with the Rev. Edward Whit son and the Rev. Roy Good son officiating. Interment followed in the family plot of Valleytown Cemetery. Pallbearers were Chub Brooks, DeWitt Sharpe, J. B. Gregory, Jr., Dee Mosteller, Sam Webb and Gene West.
