in an intoxicated condition. It
is the judgement of the court
that the defendant be impri
soned in the county jail for
their term of 90 days and
assigned to do work of $100.00
and the cost of this action.
The prison sentence was sus
pended for a period of two
years under conditions.
Helen R. Kephart pled guilty
to operating a motor vehicle
without a valid driver's li
cense. It is the judgement
of the court that the cost be
paid from the $36.00 deposit
in the hands of the clerk, and
that the balance of the deposit
be turned over to the school
fund as a fine.
Odis Fred Sneed pled guilty
to exceeding a safe speed
while driving upon the public
hlghvays. It is the judgement
of the court that the cost first
be paid from the deposit of
$35.00 cash in the hands of
the clerk and that the balance
of the deposit be turned over
to the school fund as a fine.
Billy McKiimey pled not
guilty to speeding upon the
public highways. After hearing
the evidence the court finds
the defendant guilty as charged
of speeding 65 mph in a 45
mph zone. It is the judge
ment of the court that the
defendant be imprisoned In the
county jail for the term of
three months and assigned to
work under the s?4>er vision of
the State Prison Department
and pay a fine of $25.00 and
the cost. The prison sentence
Is suspended by arid with the
consent of the defendant given
in open court for a period of
one year under conditions.

Hard Luck Cuz!
There is no doubt about it.
1 have die worst kind of luck.
Misfortune seems to dog my
footsteps. It doesn't nuke *ny
difference how hard I try to
calamities, actually I
they are always looking
for me to happen to.
This Latest bit of bad luck,
1 know, has happened to a lot
of other folks. In fact. I under
stand It takes place just about
every day. However, when It
befell others I have known
about, darned If they didn't
always seem much more able
to stand the shock. Why In a
lot of cases I have even known
'em to be real pleased, some
of 'em get so tickled you d
think they had Inherited a
young fortune. But those who
act like that, It is plain to
see, are just a little tetched.
If they ain't to begin with
I'd betcha a bushel of Scran
ton buttons they will be just
as soon as the full impact of
the calamity descends on 'era.
I always thought you had to
be a lot older than I am for a
thing like this to hit you.
I know my older sister was
darn near the half century
mark before she suffered one
of these catastrophles. And
here I am only about to turn
40 and the roof has caved In
on me. So far I'm bearing up
reasonably well under the
strain but I don't know how
long It is gonna last.
This thing that happened to
me Is the one event I have
been dreading mighty bad for
several years. There was only
one other thing I dreaded
more, and that was getting old.
No, I'm lying, cause I dreaded
more than anything the thought
of maybe NOT GETTING OLD.
Course I don't know of any
thing that will mark you any
more clearly as an old-timer
than when you have this happen
to you.
I feel sure you have worried
right along with me about my
getting prematurely bald, also
about the fringe getting a lit
tle gray. And I have been a
little concerned about this
spare tire around my middle,
pouches under my eyes, and
the crow's feet at their cor
ners, arms continuing to grow
shorter, knobby knees, and a
few other little tell-tale signs
of approaching the Sr. Citizen
bracket. Yeah. I worried and
fretted over these things but
I reckon it's just as well they
happened when they did. They
all kinda fit me for the role
I'm gonna have to play from
now on.
You are probably in a hurry
for me to tell you what this
catastrophe was so you can
begin to devise ways and
means of avoiding it. Well, I
can tell you there's nothing
you can do to prevent it- No
defense, and no known cure
unless you want to go ahead
and die young. It's that kind
of thing. Sorta like going down
a long steep hill and you want
to slow down some, you feel
comfortable, safe, and secure
cause you know all you have to
do is touch your brakes.
You do and they hit the flo
bodellll Ever have that happen
to you? Leaves you with a
sinking, sorta frantic feeling,
doesn^ It?
Well, 111 tell you about it,
and this is how it all began.
The phone rang. Sounded
ominous, too, but I picked It
up anyhow. A very pleasant
voice (and how anyone can be
bright and cheerful at a time
like this is more than I can
fathom? you can tell there's
? lotta NUTZ in this World
?and steer clear of "em if
you can) said; "Is this Mr.
Such & Such?" 1 admitted my
Identity inmadUtelr. And why
I'll do that to a rank stranger
is more than I know. It's like
I was proud of being who I
am. I'm not, so I sure don't
understand how come I am so
foolish. One thing certain I'm
planning on being much more
careful in the future. Anyhow,
then P. V. (Pleasant Voice)
said. "This is Western
Union."
Now you know Western
Union doesn't ever have any
thing but bad news so Ibraced
myself and P. V. continued
with, "Dear Grandpa I" That's
when I stopped her with, "Mam
I am pretty sure vou have die
wrong number.' Again she
wanted to know If I waa who
I had aAnltted to being and like
? pure nut I owned 19 to It a
second time. Thia la what you
call compounding a felony.
Well, she continued happily
with her Utile meaaage and
every word waa dropping with
all the gloom and finality of
the whack of a guillotine.
Seems I had become a
grandee of a wriggling, little,
red, wrinkled, aquawllag, and
you know what else kind of a

ahadow of the Cow palace
while that shindig was In full
swing on July U.

your sympathy until you had
all the facta, now you've got

You know the terrible pro
cess this sets in motion, don't
you? Let me just tell you!
This means, purely and

Well, all I can promise you
is that 1 am sure not gonna
get all excited and begin doing
a lotta silly things. Nor do
any bragging or nothing like
that.

Now how about THAT???
Wonder what it would cost
to fly out to California. I hear
the rates are very, very
reasonable.

olina Baptist Hospital and the

He is beginning residency
training in obstetrics and
gynecology.
Mauney holds the B. S. and
M. D. degrees from the Uni
versity of North Carolina. He
recently completed an Intern
ship at University Hospital
and Hillman Clinic in Bir
mingham, Ala.

first six months of 1964 Nan
tahala Power and Light Com
pany has constructed 16.55
miles of rural distribution
lines, bringing the company's
total mileage of rural lines
to 1,666.16.
Also, during the first half
of the year, Nantahala has
gained 338 additional rural
customers, bringing the com
pany's total number of rural
customers to 14,758. All cus
tomers outside city limits of
towns In Nantahala's distri
bution area are classified as
rural.
Figures listing new rural
lines and additional rural cus
tomers added by Nantahala
during the first half of 1964
were included in the com
pany's semi-annual report to
the North Carolina Utilities
Commission.
At the end of the first six
months of the year, Nantahala
is serving a total of 18,128
customers.

Center in February of this
