Cherokee Scout & Clay County Prog., Thurs., Nov. 12, 1964 I Am humbly grateful for the wonderful confidence and trust that was placed in me by the vote which I received on Nov. 3rd for Representative of Cherokee County. I want to thank everyone who voted for me and everyone who worked in my behalf or even spoke a good word for me. I( also, want to thank all my good Republican Friends who ''crossed over" courageously to give me their vote. I hope and pray that I can represent all the citizens of this county in such a manner that no one will ever regret having voted for me. Sincerely, MARY FAYE BRUMBY Representative Eiect From Cherokee County Cut'i Corn; By Boglr* This Thing Colled Status You know some folks try to Join everything they can find. Others do their dead level best not to join any thing. I fall into the latter category. It la not tham I'm lazy, or that I think all these civic endeavors aren't good. They are extra fine. Don't hardly see how we could get along without 'em. They all do so much good and seems like there's sure a lot that needs doing. Course, some of them just give you status. Now status Is ? mighty bandy thing to have. You can't hardly get by without some of It. Ana U really does a lot for you. When you begin to pick up a right smart of It, It klnda begins to snowball. What It does for you Is cause every outfit in the country to want to get you for a member. If they can't get you for a real live active member they will make you an honorary member. Now this Is the best kind of a member to be. You don't have to pay dues .attend meet ings, or nothing like that. When these clubs and things make you an honorary mem ber THEY'RE looking for the STATUS. 1 know a lot of people who are honorary members of first one thing and then ano ther. In fact, I'm one myself. Let's see I'm an honorary member of the. . .No, 1 be lieve it's the. . .Well, to tell you the truth, I'm not an honorary member of nothing. You see, only folks that amount to something and have status can get to be one of these. But I'll tell you this: The church 1 belong to has thought some about making me an honorary member of it on ac count of I don't attend too many meetings. Lots of oth ers don't either. This vexes the preacher. You see, he's got some kinda notion that all members ought* go to nearly *bout all the meetings they have. And if you belong to a Baptist church there are a right smart of 'em to go to. Actually, if you went to all they had you'd have to be, at least, triplets. Maybe quintuplets. I'm not absolutely sure you could make 'em all even then, but you would have a little better chance. Talking about my church making me an honorary mem ber, I kinda liked the idea until I found out they wanted me to keep right on paying dues. Well, not dues excatly. But you know what I'm talking about. The more status you have, well, the more status you will get. That's kinda like making money, I think. If you ever do hit It lucky and commence to making a lot of it, they tell roe. It ain't no trouble to mete still more. Course now, I don't actually know loo aw ful much about that. The truth is I don't know a darn thing about U, and I reckon I had better stick to this status business. At least, it's kinda intangible. Money is, as (he Indian aaid, the same alike, as far as 1 am concerned. I used to think I'd like to rme some status, especia flnancial. 1 gave up alto gether on that. Then 1 thought I'd take a whack at acme social status. Figuring, you see. that maybe if I could latch on to some of it. per haps I'd find out how to get a hole of a little of the other. Well, I did finally get asked to join s few of chase hi powered clvical outfits. PTA, don't count, and it isn't one of the aforementioned. Any body can join that whether you ought to or not. They even put on powerful member ship drives. I might give you some ad vice right here. If you join the PTA and act the least bit interested, like 1 used to, until I learned better, the* will give you all sorta work to do. So the thing to do is just sit there and keep your mouth shut. Don't make or second any motions. If there is any voting done always vote with the majority. Lots of times it's a good idea to ab stain. That has (he advantage of making everybody wonder Just what you are thinking about any given issue. Sometimes this plan keeps anybody from getting mad with you. Others, it will make every body mad with you. The best thing to do is to miss that meeting. When they surt appoint ing committees to do any kind of work leave the room as fast as you can with your hand over your mouth like you are sick. You might as well leave 'cause if you get put on a committee it would make you sick anyhow, and you should just excuse yourself before that happens. But it is nice to belong to a lot of civic organizations and some kind of a church. This proves you have sta tus, that you do amount to something, and that you are not a complete bum.
