Payne TEXAS - Airman John H. Payne, son of Mr. and Mrs. Violet D. Payne of Rt. 1, Br ass town, has been selected for technical training at Sheppard AFB, Tex., as a U.S. Air Force refrigeration and air conditioning specialist. Airman Payne, a 1965grad uate of Hayes ville High School, recently completed basic military training at Lackland AFB, Tex. Roy E. Underwood USS GEORGE CLYMER - Seaman Apprentice Roy E. Underwood, USN, son of Mrs. Aleen H. Underwood, of Mar ble, returned to San Diego, Calif. Aug. 12, aboard the attack transport USS George Clymer, following deployment to the Western Pacific and operations with the Seventh Fleet. Operating as a unit of Am phibious Squadron Three, which left the United States in early May, Clymer assisted in the transport of 3 battal ion sized landing teams, 1 re gimental landing team and a Navy beachmaster unti to Ok inawa and elements of a Marine air group to Iwakuni, Japan. After completion of this task, and in the process of preparing for return to San Diego, the ships of Amphib ious Squadron Three wereor ered to return to Okinawa, to embark Marine combat units for transport to Da Nang.Viet Nam. Upon conpletion of the em barkation, the squadron, which arrived at Okinawa, two days after the squadron comm ander, proceded to Da Nang. Area Men In Service Maynard J. Mills MAINZ, GERMANY - SFC (e-7) Maynard J. Mills, ass igned to Service Battery, 1 Battalion, 81 Artillery, in Ma inz, Germany was placed on Temporary Duty with B Battery, of die same Batta lion to be flown to Green River, Utah for the purpose of their Annual Service Practice for Pershing Battalion. SFC (e-7) Mills was the Engineer Maint. Supervisor for the eng ineering equipment used for the test. After the Pershing Missile was fired most of the men were given a leave. Mills was gran ted a 37 day leave which he spent at home with his wife, Mrs. Virginia Scroggs Mills, in Brasstown. While at home Mills joined the Freemason Lodge #146 in Murphy. He returned to his home unit in Germany on the 22 day of July. Mills is a Section Chief. He has 22 men assigned to the Engineering Section in Seyvice Battery. Mills rece ived a letter from his Battery Commander commending him for an outstanding job well done. Howard Buchanan, Jr. PARR1S ISLAND - Marine Private Howard Buchanan, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Ho ward Buchanan, of Route 2, Murphy, is scheudled tograd uate August 24 from Marine recruit training at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot at Parris i Island, S. C. During his'U weeks of re cruit training under veteran noncomissioned officer Drill , Instructors, he learned small arms marksmanship, bayonet fighting, and methods of self- I protection, as well as receiv ing instruction in military . drill, history and traditions of < the Marine Corps, and other I academic subjects. ; He will be assigned to Camp Lejeune, N. C. for at least ' four weeks of advanced infan try combat training before ' being assigned to a school or 1 to a Marine combat or support I unity. John T. Reed P ARRIS ISLAND - Marine Private John T. Reed, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry L. Reed of Terrace Avenue, Murphy, is scheduled to graduate Aug. 24 from Marine recruit tra ining at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot at Parris Is land, S. C. During his 11 weeks of recruit training under veteran noncommissioned officer Dr ill Instructors, he learned small arms marksmanship, bayonet fighting, and methods of self-protection, as well as receiving instruction in mil itary drill, history and trad itions of the Marine Corps, and other academic subjects. He will be assigned toCamp Lejeune, for at least four weeks of advanced infantry combat training before being assigned to a school or to a Marine combat or support unit. Lindford Palmer TEXAS - Airman Second Class Lindford Palmer, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Lind ford Palmer, Sr. of Route 1, Murphy, has arrived for duty at Perrln AFB, Tex. Airman Palmer, an elec trical power production spec ialist, previously served at Tomopah Air Force Station, Nev. He is a member of the Air Defense Command which provides aerospace defense against hostile aircraft and missiles.
