Cherokee County 1 Well Represented At Asheville Meet By: Mrs. Lloyd Hendrlx: Cherokee County was well represented at the Annual Community Development Club dinner which was held on Sat urday, December 4th, in the asheville City Auditorium. Of the 800 guests present, some 36 people occupied the two tables designated for Cherokee County. The Christmas colors of white, red, and green were beautifully carried out with carnations, grown in Hender son County combined with holly and candles to make things very festive. The meeting gave one a great sense of unity in pur pose of the entire Community Development Club Program as Governor Moore spoke. He recognized agricultural state leaders, who had helped from the state level, the state plan ning committee of which Mrs. Ed Brumby is a member. She was present to stand for us. The area committees, of which Murphy's Mrs. Bud Alverson is a member were recognized and Mr. Alverson was there to stand for his county. Then ou county workers such as Miss Thelma Wheeler and Mr. Jack Early were there to stand as the local leaders from the counties were recognized. It presented such a wonderful picture of the work from the top executive to the individual ' In his own little community. We proudly heard Peachtree farm area,Tomotla,non-farm area, given honorable mention of work done in their comm unities and presented certi ficates with $50 awards. Also Unaka, represented by Mr. Jones, a 4-Hyouth,givena$35 ' award, and citation for work done in the Youth Division of his community. Kelly Williams Is Honored MURPHY - Mrs. Wallace P. Williams honored her daugh ter, Kelly on Saturday after noon, December 4, with a brithday party at their home. After games were played and favors of candy caries and balloons were given, the gifts were opened, and the hostess served cake and ice cream to the following: Tina McKeever, Ingrid and Jackie Beerkins, Bob Gentry, Steve Shulty, George Ramsey, Tammie McConnell, Shannon Hembree and Aggie Sprung. She wore a Door-length gown of white silk over taffeta. The bodice featured lace over taffeta with a scalloped neckline and long pointed sleeves. Her elbow length veil of illusion was held by a cluster of pearls. She carried a bouquet of yel low roses. Mrs. Aline Waldroup was matron of honor for her sister and wore a floor-length gown of aqua blue satin and mat ching veil. She carried a long stem yellow rose. Cecil Smith, brother of the bridegroom, served as best man. Ushers were Charles and Max McClure, brothers of the bride. The mother of the bride wore a two-piece brown suit with gold and brown access ories. The bridegroom's mot her wore a gold sheath dress with a matching short coat and brown accessories. They both had corsages of white carnations. F ollowing the cermony a re ception was held in the church. Mrs. Wilma McClure, Mrs. Dennie Sneed, Miss Joyce Stiles and Miss Joyce Bates assisted in serving. When the couple left for a wedding trip to Ohio, the bride was wearing a brown dress with matching accessories. At her shoulder was the corsage of yellow roses from her bri dal bouquet. Mrs. Smith graduated from MURPHY High School and is em ployed at Clifton Precision Product Company in Murphy. Mr. Smith attended school in Ohio and is now employed at B.O.P. in Atlanta, Ga. Mrs. Jean Da Armand Dies In Denver, Cel. MURPHY - Mrs. Jean Mauney De Around, 37, of Murphy, died Saturday, Doc ember 4, In a Denver, Colo rado hospital after a long Ill Mr s. DeArmand entered the hospital October 16 for a kid ney transplant operation. She was a native of Chero kee County, a charter member of the Murphy BAPW Club, the Archibald D. Murphey chapter of DAR and Cherokee Joits Wiis Second Place Chester Jones, a 4-H'er of the Unaka Community was na med second place winner In the Horticultural Crops Con test at the Western North Carolina Community Devel opment Awards Banquet In Ashevllle, Saturday. He re ceived a plaque and a cash award of $35.00. Chester, who grew .5 acre of trellised to matoes, placed second over outstanding competition from other 4-H dub and F.F.A. members In the eighteen Wes tern North Carolina Counties. Thirty-five community de velopment leaders from Cher okee County attended theawa rds banquet sponsored by the Ashevllle Agricultural Dev elopment Council, which also sponsors the annual Comm unity Development Contest. This year 115 communities In 18 co unties participated in the contest and over 800 people attended the Awards Banquet. Governor Moore was guest speaker and M. E. Hollo well, Western District Agricultu ral Extension Agent, presen ted the awards. Cherokee County's entries in the area contest were: To motla, Non -Farm Division; Peach tree, Farm Division; and Unaka, Youth Division. Each community received ho norable mention in the area contest. Tomotla and Peach tree each received a $50 aw ard and Unaka Youth receiv ed an engraved plaque. Mr. Wallie P. Williams spent Monday in Chattanooga, Tenn. on business. -M I ] Democratic Women's Club. At one time die wis sec retary to former Congress man Monroe E. Redden,Wil bur Mills and David Hall. She moved from Washington, D. C. In 1960 to Jacksonville, Florida where she was an employee of Home's Enter prises. Surviving are the husband, E. F. DeArmand; the parents, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Mauney of Murphy; a daughter, Jane Green of Murphy; a son, Mark, Green of Subiaco Academy, Ark.; two brothers, Harry M. Mauney of Murphy and Cape. Walter F. Mauney, M.D. of Hawaii. Services were held at 11.-00 a.m. Tuesday in Murphy First Methodist Church of which she was a member. The Rev. Clark Benson and the Rev. Alfred Smith offi ciated and burial was in Sun set Cemetery. Pallbearers were John Dickey, Dr. Paul Hill, R. G. Alexander, Jr., Ben E. War ner, Jr., Carl Meroney and Robert V. Weaver. Former Murphyite Dies In Car Crash Mrs. Donnie Hampton Mln chew, 34, originally from Murphy, was killed In an auto mobile accident, Wednesday, December 1, in Jacksonville, Florida. She is survived by her hus band, R. A. Mlnchew, Chief in the U. S. Navy, stationed in Jacksonville, Fla; two young daughters of the home; father, Mr. W. A. Hampton of Rt. 1, Culberson; mother, Mrs. John Phillips of Keystone Hei ghts, Fla.; three brothers, Leslie, Chief in die Seabees, stationed in Spain; Troy Ja mes, Baltimore, Md., and Lake Hampton of Culberson, N.
