THE CHEROKEE SCOUT and CLAY COUNTY PROGRESS Letters To The [ditor Dear Editor: Clay County has recently received a grain from the government in the amount of $102,000.00 lor the improve ment and aid of our elemen tary schools. Needless to say, especially those of us with school children, we encourage and support all improvements in our schools. The improve ment was made in the form of additional personnel. However, 1 question the pro cess by which the personnel for the 22 full time and 4 part time positions were sel ected. No doubt the people selected are qualified to assume these positions but my complaint is that the majority of those employed are either wives or relatives of people in the Department of Educ ation. This writer inquired of our Superintendent of Schools as to the exact figures but was told he "didn t know". 1 propose that these pros pective openings should have been made public, applications taken Irorn anyone interested in applying and selections made from those with highest qualifications. There are sev eral of our recent high school graduates who drive to Mur phy every day and are wasting their education operating a sewing machine. These bright young minds would have been an asset to our children. As most Clay Countians are aware this type of discrimin ation isn't new here. Is it to be the rule always? If so, what incentive do our youngster: have to plan to remain in Clay Count)/ or why should the adults go to adult educations classes at rnght if they are never to be considered for any position within their ia pabilities. The question m point is: Is the Board of Education in terested in using these funds made available to us for im proving our school system or increasing the income of .b own families." C1. Brugh Dear Editor: Last Christmas Day a mem orial service for the late Rev. W. Thomas Iruett was held at Hoepwell Baptist Church where Mr. Truett had pre ached on this same Day for over thirty years. It was an impressive and inspirational service, presided over by Mrs. Myrtle Moore, a long time friend of the Truetts. At this meeting we felt it altogether fitting arid proper to elect a committee, empow ered to solicit funds and to purchase a respectable mon ument for him and his late wife. This committee pre sently is composed of Mr. Randall Mundy, Mr. Frank Howell, Mrs. Nellie Curtis, and Everett R. White , Tre asurer. This committee has rece ived to date of this writing one-hundred fifty dollars and three cents, banked to The W. Thomas Truett Memorial Fund.
