little Simple Things
One of my friends said that
he guessed if I didn't go to
a hospital so often I'd run out
of anything to write about. Now
there is a wealth of material
to be written about hospitals
all right, but I sure didn't
agree with this friend that 1
had to turn in as a patient in
order to think up somethng
to write about.
For instance, I got a letter
the other day from a lady,
and I'm just having a fit to tell
you about the story she wrote
me about a popeyed goldfish.
But I'm gonna save that for
another time, and, besides,
that story is a lot funnier
than I feel right now.
Maybe I'm a lot easier im
pressed than a lot of other
folks. I know every time I
have to enter a hospital many
things seem to make an inde
lible impression on me - little
simple things, and I can just
hear you saying, "Yeah,being
s imple minded like you are it's
no wonder." But you just stop
and think, if it weren't for
a lot of simple minded folks
like me a lot of you smart
people would probably be outta
work. It takes a bunch of you
sharp cookies to look after all
us dumb clucks.
But back to some of the little
things that haveimpressedme
on this go round. One morning
I was lying here on my bed
of affliction getting some dia
thermy heat on my goofed up
shoulder. A stranger walked
in, looked at that Arthur Gold
bergerish machine, and draw
led, "What's zee madder with
ye?" I said he was a stranger
to me - he was also a stranger
to soap and water, razor
blades, clean clothes, and
manners, but there was one
familiar thing about him - an
odor that vaguely reminded me
of Swet, horse stalls, saw
mills, and chewing terbacker.
I told him I had an aching
shoulder. He says, "How long
ye been in here?" And I told
him "about three or four
days." Then he said, "Shucks,
(Shucks is about as close as I
want to get to what he really
said) I laid right in this same
room eight whole days one
time with a bullet in my belly."
Well, now, I was tenjpted to
tell this character that what
ailed me, how long I'd been
in here, etc. were none oi his
cotton picking business, but
after he told me how Xtry
LONG he'd lain in here with a
slug in his gut, I was kinda
glad I'd been polite to him.
But just between me and
you I sure thought to myself
that somebody must've shot
him a right smart too low
down. Then again, you can't
always tell, he may turn out
to be a right valuable citizen.
Then another thing that
never fails to impress me is
how pleasant and good natured
all these folks who work here
always seem to be. 1 reckon
they all have to take a study
course in smiles. What I'd
really like to know, though, is
what they say about me, or
think, after they leave my
room. You know after they've
made about fourteen trips,
first to see what I wanted
and then to bring it back to
me. Course I reckon it's a
good thing I don't know and
can't find out what they really
think.
Another circumstance that
impresses me is how fast a
gib platter full of home made
fudge can evaporate in a place
like this. Elaine Voyles sent
me a big pile of it, and I
figured it'd last me a solid
week - but the dad gummed
stuff was gone in less'n an
hour. Now the way they ex
plained about that, those who
managed to get here in time,
was that my being such a sick
man I didn't need all those
calories. What they did was try
to convince me that they were
only trying to safeguard my
delicate health.
Course I saw through
their argument and did my
best to convince them that
they oughta eat some of that
basket of fruit that Miriam
Moore brought me - tried to
tell 'em that the vitamins in
grapes, bananas, oranges and
apples would make their
cheeks pink and their lips
rosy. But they said they could
paint all the pink and rosy on
that they needed. Anyhow I
would up with all the vitamins
and they got all the calories,
which, I reckon, it about a fair
swap.
That candy deal was kinda
enlightening though. As long as
it lasted I was thinking that
the whole push just thought
so much of me that they all
wanted to come in and say
a few kind words to me -
but I found out about that soon
as that stuff was gone.
Then I've been impressed
by the number of folks who've
said they were doing a lot of
praying for me. And I can tell
you I appreciate every one of
era too. Course I kinda feel
a little guilty about that on
account of I'm afraid that with
for me they're liable to neglect
someone a lot more important
than I am.
Several preachers, bless
'em, have been in to see me.
And I've enjoyed their visits
all except one. I reckon I
would've gotten a kick out
of that particular person's
visit too - but the only tro
uble was that he wouldn't let
me tell him about all my
operations. He just insisted on
telling me about his - and you
know how boresome it is hav
ing to listen to some body
else's and not get to tell about
your own.
lewis Family To Appear
At Peachtree School
The songs and music of the
Lewis Family of Augusta,
Georgia has found a permanent
place in the hearts of the
people in this area. This
statement was proven last
year when the Lewis Family
arrived on this cold, snowy
night at Peachtree School to
fulfill their engagement and
found the auditorium filled
to capacity.
Saturday night, March 12,
| they will return to Peachtree
f School for their 4th annual
| Gospel Sing and Entertainment
Program.
The Lewis Family consists
of Wallace Lewis on guitar,
Little Roy Lewis on 5-string
banjo, Talmadge Lewis on
fiddle, and Polly Lewis
on bass, Janice and Miggy
Lewis, two of the very at
tractive sisters, are featured
on vocals and sing harmony
with various members of the
family according to the par
ticular arrangement that
seems best suited for each
song. Pop Lewis also helps on
the vocals and is responsible
for encouraging his children to
learn to play and sing the great
old gospel songs that will al
ways be popular in America.
It has often been said that
'The family who prays to
gether stays together*. Sing
ing and worshipping in the
South is done in groups, often
with the entire family partic
ipating. We think this is one
of the main reasons why the
Lewis Family has such a great
appeal to people in this area.
