units in Southeast Asia, the
Far East and Pacific.
The sergeant is a graduate
of Murphy High School

MABS-12 operates all the
facilities required to maintain
the expeditionary airfield and
base camp at MAG-12. The
tactical squadrons located at
the airfield operate on a var
iety of missions against the
Viet Cong in support of Mar
ine ground forces and other
forces engaged in combat op
erations.

to Army pay grade private
E- 2 on completion of basic
combat training at Fort Hood,
Texas, May 13.
Conley was awarded the pr
omotion two months earlier
than is customary because of
his score in firing the M-14
rifle, high score on the phy
sical combat proficiency test
and his military bearing and
leadership abilities.
The early promotion pro
grim is sn Army policy pro
viding incentive to outs uncling
trainees.
He entered the Army last
March.
The 19-year-old soldier is a
1964 graduate of Murphy High
School.
Harold Wilson
SSGT. Johnny B. Thompson,
local Marine Corps recruiter
for the Murphy area, ann
ounced that Harold Mercer
Wilson of Marble enlisted in
the Marines 120 day delay pro
gram today for two years. He
will continue at his present
job and begin recruit training
in July at Parris Island, S.C.
The 120 day delay plan
prevents Harold from being
drafted plus a portion of his
obligated service is being ful
filled now. Upon completion of
120 days he will be eligible
for promotion and a pay in
crease.

Retires From
Bookmobile
Mrs. Mabel McFalls Ray
burn has retired as book
mobile librarian for the Nan
tahala Regional library.
Mrs. Rayburn has served
the three-county region of
Clay, Cherokee and Graham
counties for twenty years, as
an employee of Nantahala Re
gional Library. Previous to
this she has worked on the
W.P.A. bookmobile in Cher
okee County. This was during
the time TVA was building Hi
wassee Oam and TVA and
WPA cooperated in giving
library service to this area.
The Nantahala Regional Li
brary was formed after this
service was withdrawn and
Mrs. Rayburn has worked on

The 4-H Club Strawberry
show and sale was held Satu
rday, May 28, on the square in
Murphy with 58 quarts of berr
ies entered. The strawberries
were judged prior to the sale
on the bsis of size, shape,
color, uniformity, ripeness
and quality of berries. Red
ribbons were awarded to Te
rry Sanders, Steve Golden,
Doris Ann Morrow, Marlene
Beavers and Hubert Wells.
Blue ribbons were presented
to Ann Hatchett and Ricky
Aiken. Rickey Aiken was ju
dged to have the best lot of
strawberries and was awarded
time.
A luncheon was given by
Mrs. Felix Palmer, director
of the Regional Library, on
May 20th, in honor of Mrs.
Rayburn.

grow strawberries. The de
mand for berries always ex
ceeds the supply. Teenagers
are always needing money and
are always looking for jobs.

income of their own."
