BEAL, superintendent of Clay County Schools, presented service pins to retired Clay County teachers at a meeting of the Clay County NCEA at Hinton Mmeorial Rural life Center last Thursday. The 13 retired school personnel have given a total of 410 years service to the schools of Clay County and North Carolina. Barbara Henson Named Homemaker Hayesville High School's 1966 Betty Crocker Homema ker of Tomorrow is Barbara Ann Henson. She scored hi ghest in a written knowledge and attitude examination taken by senior girls December 7, 1965, and is now eligible for state and national scholarship awards. Barbara has already earned a special award pin from the program's sponsor General Mills. Test papers of all school winners in the state are being judged, and a State Home maker of Tomorrow and ru nner-up will be selected soon. The State Homemaker of To morrow will receive a $1,500 college scholarship, and her school will be awarded a com plete set of Encyclopaedia Br itannica. Inc. The second ranking girl in the state will receive a $500 educational grant. She is the daughter of Rev. and Mrs. Sam Henson of Hay esville, N.C. Mr. and Mrs. Howard Bar nard and sons from Atlanta spent the weekend with their parents Mr. and Mrs. D.H. Barnard and Mr. and Mrs. Manuel Bradshaw. Swim Registration To Be Held Monday Four Square Community A ction Inc. will conduct free swimming lessons this summ er for the people of Clay Co unty. Lessons will be tau ght at Lake Chatuge. Registration for the swim ming lessons will be held on June 6th at the Hayesville Library between the hours of 9 a.m. and 12noon. The classes will be under the direct supervision of Four-Square in conjunction with the American Red Cross. Mrs. Inez Kahn of Hayesville a qualified Red Cross Water Safety Instructor for the past thirty years has been employed to direct the swim ming program. Mrs. Kahn will be working under Bob Goforth and Jack Frauson, Four square executive director and Physical and Mental Fitness director respectively. For additional information contact Wendell Moore. Clay County's Physical and Mental Fitness director. Classes will be taught in the mornings. Howard Mathason and Paul Rdwland Demos Pick Hogsed For Sheriff, Allison Easy Winner On GOP Slate Clay County voters nomin ated candiates for county offices In Saturday's primary. Howard Hogsed won the De mocratic nomination for sher iff. He defeated John V. Carter 457-280. William T. Grove, Max Wal droup and Neal Jarrett were unopposed on the Democratic ticket for the county commi ssioners race. Robert Alexander defeated Norman Davenport in the Democratic contest for the Board of Education, 450-268. There was only one contest on the county Republican tick et. Ralph Allison crushed Ed gar Moore in the GOP race for Clerk of Superior Court 558-180. Fred Ledford was unoppo sed as the republican can didate for the Board of Edu cation and A.F. Padgett, O.A. Blank ens hip, and Odell Shook were uncontested for the co unty commissioners nomina tions. Clay voters of both par ties followed the pattern that existed throughout the area in the other contests. ?. c^agem en t -Announced Mr. and Mrs. Paul Cooke of Hayesville, announce the engagement of their daughter Sandra Jane to Wade Bryan Strickland, son of Rev. and Mrs. Stanley H. Strickland of Douglas, Ga. Miss Cookegraduatedfrom Hayesville High School and attended Georgia State Col lege. She is employed by Ci tizens and Southern Bank in Atlanta, Ga. Mr. Strickland graduated from Coffee County High Sch ool and attended Woodrow Wi Lw School. He is employed by E.C. Ernst Eelectrical Con tractors. Clay Group Visits LakeWinnepesaukah A group of 60 students from the eighth grade of Hayes vllle Elementary School made their first trip to Lake Win nepesaukah Friday, May 20. Crawford in the state senate race, 587-115. Robert Leatherwoodlll and Felix E. (Gene) Alley, Jr. were easy winners for the District Court Judge races in Clay as they were in the rest of the area. Leatherwood polled 537 Clay votes. Alley, 407, James H. Howell, Jr. 181 and Guy L. Houk 79. Mrs. Myers Gets Diploma At 38 You're never too old to learn. That's the philosophy of Mrs. Veda Estes Myers who graduated from HayesvilleHi gh School last night at the age of 38. Mrs. Myers, a housewife and mother, had been reg ularly attending classes with the 1966 graduates. She is a direct descendant of the famed pioneer Daniel Boone. The bride is the daughter >f Mr. and Mrs. Charles E. 3eadles of Hayesville, Nor th Carolina. The bridegroom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Leonard B. Ellis of Arling ton. Officiating at the double ring ceremony was the Rev. John Reinheimer, rector of the church. Escorted by her father, the bride wore a floor-length em pire gown of silk organza. Over die sleeveless gown was a coat of the same material, fashioned with long sleeves ending in points over the hands. The back of the coat eneded in a chapel train wh ile the front fell from the empire bodice to reveal a panel of appliqued lace down the front of the gown. The bride's shoulder-lengtn veil of imported silk illusion fell from a center .of organza pe tals trimmed with seed pearls. She carried a cascade bou quet of roses and stephonotis. Mrs. Dennix Morgan of La ndover, Md., was matron-of honor. Bridesmaids were Miss Nancy Tuttle and Miss Robin Deck, both of Washin gton, D.C. All attendants wore melon-colored floor length gowns of organza over soft taffeta. The gowns were fashioned with long sleeves of organza, scooped neck lines, and empire bodices trimmed with beads of the same color. Headpieces of matching color were Dior bows holding small bouffant veils of illusion. The attendants carried cascade bouquets of shasta daises tip ped with flame carnations. Mr. Steven Ellis of Man nassas, Virginia, washisbro ther's best man. Mr. Robert L. Beadles, of Greenbelt.Md., brother of the bride and W. Harold Farrington, Jr. of Fa lls Church, Va. were ushers. The bride's mother wore a pink crepe suit-dress with matching accessories. The mother of the bridegroom was attired in an esemble of blue silk with matching acc essories. Both mothers had corsages of phalenopsis orc hids. Following the ceremony the guests were greeted by the bridal party at a reception at the church. The bride is a graduate of Pfeiffer College, Misenheim er, North Carolina. Thebride groom received his degree from Virginia Pogytechnic In stitute. Both are employed by Bionetics Research Laborat Moore Announces s13,248 Grant For Clay Library During his visit to Peach tree last Thursday, Gov. Dan K. Moore annouced a grant of (13,248 toward construction of a new public library at Hay esville. The grant was approved by (he Appalachian Regional Co mmission. Final approval by Secretary of Commerce John Conner is needed. Following the secretary's approval, the Department of Health, Edu cation, and Welfare will imp lement the grant under the Appalachian Regional Deve lopment Act of 1965. This grant will be part of a total cost of $80,000 to co nstruct a library to serve Clay County. It will be part of the Nantahala Regional Library System covering Clay, Cher okee and Graham counties. In addition totheAppalachia grant, $50,752 will he prov ided under the Library Serv ices Construction Act and $16,000 will come from local sources. Gibson To Receive Dental Degree James R. Gibson, Jr. of Hayesville will receive the degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery from the Univer sity of North Carolina at Cha pel Hill during graduation ce remonies on Monday. Gibson completed his pre dental studies at UNC. After graduation , he will be commissioned as a Cap tain in the U.S. Army and will be stationed at Fort Go rdon, Georgia for two years. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. J.R. Gibson of Hay esville and is married to the former Miss Elizabeth Ann Reed Gibson, dai ^hter of Mr. and Mrs. W. Brooks Reed of Poland, Ohio.
