for Murphv, Hayesvtlie and
Kobbinsville. These schools
are to be conducted from J an
uary 23 to Marc h i. The school
is under the Manpower Deve
lopment Training Act and is to
be conducted b\ the Ashevtile
Buncombe Technical Institute.

The schools will be six

Scroggs was instrumental in
locating the John t . t'ampbell
f olk School at Rrasstown in
192S and he was a benefactor
of the school.
He and his father, known as
"1'ncle L ice", said that they
wanted a school which would
help the country and "not make
just preachers and teachers"
in 192S. Thev helped organize
meetings which led to theloc
-irion of the Hoik School at
Rrasstown.
Many people have express
ed the view that he, "more
than anyone else", was res
ponsible for the founding of
the school. He was "of tre
mendous help" to the two
founders of the school, Oh\e
Dame C ampbell andMarguer
ite Rutler Hidstrup.
Scroggs was an ardent rock
hound and he played in major
role in the founding of the Tn
State Rockhounders.
He was a charter member
of the Southern Appalachian
Mineral Society, a former cr
aftsman and historian. He was
recognized for his work in
opening Indian mounds for the
Smithsonian Institute.
He was a retired merchant,
farmer, school 'eacher and
political leader. A graduate
of \oung Harris College, hc
taught school in Cherokee,
Clav an-.! Anson Counties anil
served as postmaster at Hr
asstown for several vars.
He also served on hoth the
Cherokee an-! Clay Countv
Board of Commissioners.

Blue Ridge Mountain CMC of
Young Harris, CI a, and a mem
her of theHickorv Stand Meth
odist Church.
He was the son of the late
Lucius Lee and Lillie Strange
Scroggs.
