BAG ;'j '? ?".) ? ?. a 'L jt . . iS* ?ch dfc Cherokee County Extension News PURIFICATION OF WATER By Peachtree 4-H'ers Debbie Clayton and Sandy Led ford Water is more vital than food. Humans can live on a quart of water or other fluid a day, but an allowance of a gallon is far more comfort able, especially in a warm shelter. Radiation does not affect water. It is only if the radio active paricles themselves get into water that the water be comes dangerous. There are effective ways to decontamin ate water containing radioactive particles. The particles can be removed by the simple filtering process with paper or cloth that was described earlier, or by runn ing the water through one of the devices that are sold to soften water for home use. Perhaps an easier way would be to mix a handful of clay soil with each gallon of water and allow it to settle out over a period of a day. Congratulations to Marie Greer for being chosen as the outstanding volunteer leader for Cherokee County. The county winner and a record of her achievements in Extension work and 4-H Club work will be sent to district. The purpose of the leadership achievement award is to develop and streng then the leader training prog ram. project and organization leaders in home demon stration work in North Carolina. A silver tray will be awarded to the two high scoring leaders ineachsuper visory district.
