THE CHEROKEE SCOUT aid CUY COUHTY PROGRESS Volume 77 Number 41. M*y 4. 1967 8 p.?, This Week FuMf*** C? Regional Library To Assist In Opening Of Moss Library With the opening of the new Moss Memorial Library only a few weeks away, folks at the Nantahala Regional Library headquarters have been making plans to help with the move and the furnishing of books to fill the new shelves. Clay County has been a member of the Nanthala Regional Library system since Its beginning in 1942. Each of the three counties, Cherokee, Graham and Clay supports the Regional Lib rary with appropriations of 50$ per capita. In turn this region qualifies for the Reg ional Incentive Gram based on amount of local support, and earns $3,000. per county along with the Basic State Aid to Public Libraries of $4,000. per county. The headquarters library for this region is located on the ground floor of the Murphy Carnegie Library building and is staffed with a professionally trained librarian, Mrs. Felix Palmer, and business ma nager, Mrs. Bunch Nugent, who order, process, catalog books and periodicals and Mrs. C.H. Townson,Assistant director and bookmobile librarian and Mrs. Elizabeth Morris, bookmobile driver and assistant, who keep the bookmobile running in these three counties. Most of the books are purchased through a central processing center located at the State Library in Raleigh, thus avoiding much duplication and relieving the staff for other tasks. Llbrariers cooperating in a region gain many advantages that could not be achieved alone. These member libraries have access to the entire collection of books and periodicals through the interlibrary loan system. If a book is not available in J this region ? request is sent to he State Library and there, with the record of holdings of several otner large libraries, almost any book in the State can be made available to the citizens of this area. This region is fortunate to have State Library Con sultants to advise librarians and aid in new projects.
