The airman recently com pleted basic training at Lack land AFB, Tex. His new school Is part of the Air Training Command which conducts hun dreds of specialized courses to provide technically trained personnel tor tne nation's aerospace force. Airman Burch is a 1966 grad uate of Hayesville High School Raymond Stroud DA NANG, VIETNAM (FH TNC)?Marine Lance Corporal Raymond Stroud son of Mr. and Mrs. Claud Stroud of Rt. 4, Hayesville was promoted to his present rank In da Nang, Viet nam while serving with the Third Battalion , Fifth Mar ine Rgiment, a unit of the F irst Marine Division. His promotion was based on time in service and rank, mili tary apperance, and his know ledge of selected military sub jects. As a part of the Marine Corps air-ground team his battalion searches out and destroys the enemy forces -cc Mrs. Eula Miller spent last weekend with Mrs. Elmer Greene. They visited relatives in Waynesville over the week end. -CC Mrs. Bessie Sherlin is in the Hiawassee hospital. Her son Edward of Maryville, Tenn. visited her Sunday. -CC Mrs. Mary Calvin of Alex andria, Va. is spending some time in Hayes ville at her home German Exchange Student Arrives In HayesviHe Angelika Jordan, ? parti* clpant in the International Youth Exchange (ICYE), arri ved last week in Hayes vllle from Germany. Angelika, who will be living for the next year with the Harold McSwain family, is being sponsored by the Llorrs Club and will attend Hayesville High School. Before coming to Hayes ville, Angellka attended an orientation session with 300 other exchange students near Philadelphia. These students, Auberrys Observe 50th Anniversary Mr. and Mrs. Homer Au berry of Hayesville celebrated their golden wedding anniver sary July 1. Open house was held from 2 to 4 p.m. at their home. The children present were Frank Olen and Johnny, Thel ma Martin and Grace Mease all of Hayesville and Evelyn Hatchett of Gainesvlle, Ga. Two sons were not present, Roy of Arkadelphia, Ark. and Charles of Anchor age, Alaska. They have 18 grandchildren 1 two great grandchildren. No Draftees In August HA YESVILLE "Officials of Local Board No. 22, Clay County, have received infor mation from their State Headquarters that they will not be required to forward any registrants for induction or armed forces physical ex amination during the month of August. who will be assigned to fam ilies throughout the United States, come from twenty eight countries. Eighteen-year-old Angelika halls from Stetten, a small town In southern Germany. She enjoys sports, reading, and music. The purpose of ICYE Is to provide opportunities for young people of different coun tries to live in a new envir onment or culture for a year. Their experience enables them to return to their own countries with new insights into themselves, their nation, and the world situation. ICYE came Into being soon after the Second World War when German youths came to live a year with American families. This year about 500 teenagers will be exchanged among the participating nations. The McSwain's son, Hal, is spending this year with a fam ily in Germany. William Evans Dies In Ohio William S. Evans, 61, a native of Hayesville, died in an Akron, Ohio hospital June 8th, following a long Illness. He owned and operated a barber shop in Akron and had lived there 40 years. He was the son of John and Harriet Evans of Hayesville. Survivors include the widow Mrs. Thelma Evans; a bro ther, Dr. Frank Evans of Knoxville; and three sisters Mrs. Andrew Jones of Knox ville, Miss Kate Evans of. Los Angeles, and Mrs. Esther Keife of Miami, Fla. He was a veteran of World War II and a member of the Arlington Memorial Baptist Church of Akron. F uneral services and burial were in Akron. State FHA Officials Make Inspection Tour Melvin Hearn, North Car* olio* Director c f the Farmers Home Administration, led a State FHA Advisory Committee on an Inspection tour of Clay County last 15 Finish Swim Class Fifteen graduates of the American Red Cross Swim ming Class received their certificates Tuesday morning at the Lions Pavilion on Lake , Chatuge. Those completing the two week course were: Beginner -Jim Alexander, Bill Alexander, Joe Alex ander, Lynn Auberry, Dale Auberry, Patricia Lowe, Gl enda Scroggs, Joyce Scroggs, Karen Carter and Lane Mar tin. Advanced Beginner- Owen Howell and Donna Howell. Intermediate- -Mara Mc Swain. Senior Life Saving?Linday Alexander and Alice Howell. Mrs. Inez Kahn and Tommy Ledford were the instructors. Mrs. Kahn said registration is open for a new class now at the Pavilion. She said those enrolled in the class are taken to the Andrews Pool for a Pool party during the course. -cc The American Red Cross B loodmobile will be at the Clay County Health Department in Hayesville July 24 from 2 till 6 p.m. -CC The family of Captain Jim Bristol visited his mother and father last week. Captain Bristol is stationed at Fort Polk, La. -CC Jim Gibby, son of Mr. and Mrs. Homer Gibby of Hay esville has taken a position in the Virgin Islands. His wife, Ginger ?nd daughter Lisa will join him there after a month's stay with her parents Mr. and Mrs. B.F. Burch. Parker of Colerain, members of the State FHAcommittee. Hearn expressed pleasure with the work being done by the local THA >11 ice. Howell showed the group figures for the fiscal year ending June 30. A total of ISO loans were made in Clay County for 4969,280. The tour began with an inspection of the Hayes ville Homesites which are now un der construction. There was a visit to the site of the pro posed Chatuge Shores Rec reation Project and several individual FHA borrowers. A lunch and disucssion session at the Hinton Rural Life Center ended the tour. 216 Receive Eye Care Treatment A total of 216 individual eye care services were rendered in the 1966-67 fiscal year through the cooperative efforts of the Clay County Lions Club, the N.C. State Commission for the Blind, the Clay County Health Department and the Welfare Department. There were 113 eye exam inations. Sixty-two persons received glasses. There were 38 treatments and three surgery cases. Revival services will begin Sunday night, July 23, at 7:30 at Bellview Baptist Church in the Tusquitee section erf Clay County. Rev.
