After a yomg person joins 4-H how soon Is It before he or she suns accomplishing goals? The 4-H'ers In Cherokee County have aleady started working on projects which have to be completed by Sept ember 1968. This project Is being made possible for any 4-H or FFA member lnCher okee County. The members exhibits must be approved by the Agri cultural Extension Agent before entry is made. AU calves must be U. S. Grade Good or Better in order to be shown at the Baby Beef Show. The 4-H members must present up-to-date record books with their entries. This is one rule of 4-H Club work, that all 4-H Club work, that all 4-H 'ers keep records of their projects. This brings before the 4-H'er the 4-H Club mo to, "To Make The Best Better," and it emphas izes "Learning by Doing". The following 4-H and FFA members are enrolled in th.s project: Debbie Clayton, T ony Hembree, Jackie Pope, Steve Thompson, Martha Thompson, Steve Cordell, Tim Fox, Charles Hunter, Paul Thomp son, David Amos, Dennis Rog ers and Bobby Hogsed. The committee set up the rules and regul ations (or the show. An amount of $400 premium ha* been appropriated by the Lions Club of Murphy who are sponsoring this show and sale. Cherokee County Extension Home makers held their achi evement day program Oct ober 4 at the Andrews community center. Mrs. Bess Alverson, county council pre sident presided. Mrs. Wil lie Martin of the Martin's Creek club gave a very ap propriate devotional. Miss Jane Gill of Murphy presented a very interesting program on her trip to France. Since the week of October 4 was National 4-H Club Week. Miss Linda Pope gave her 4-H demonstration on the "Use of the Zipper Code". The Sun ny Point Extension club pre sented a fashion show with 17 Extension homemakers modeling dresses made during the year. Punch and cookies were served to all by the Valley town Homemakers club. Or. display were handmade art icles representing work of the club members. After the meeting everyone enjoyed a tour through Mag navox plant. Approximately 70 people (including visitors from Clay and Gt-aham counties were on hand for this county-wide event. Ivie Funeral Home M9rphy-AKdr$ws-H4y$svilh ANDREWS -Services for John Bronce Matheson, 72, who died Friday, Oct. 6 after a long illness in a local hospital, were held Sun day at 2:30 p.m. in Valley -M Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Donahue spent the weekend in Atlanta. -M Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Har shaw spent last Wednesday and Thursday in Ashe ville visiting Mr. Harshaw's sisters. Misses Ada and Helen Harshaw. -M Mr. and Mrs. Harry Dun can and daughter of Atlanta spent the weekend here with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Duncan. town Baptist Church. The Rev. Homer Wilson, the Rev. France Postell and the Rev. Luther Peters officiated. Burial was in Valley town Cemetery. Pallbearers were Neal, Glenn and Carlyle Matheson, Charlie Rogers, Jack Raxter and Archie Hambrick. Surviving are the widow, Mrs. Bertha Waldroup Matheson; four daughters, Mrs. Hazel Bristol and Mrs. Hilda Watson of Andrews, Mrs. Fay Whittemore of Fay etteville and Mrs. Helen Hawks of T uckasegee; one sis ter, Mrs. Clara Morrow of Andrews: one brother, Wayne Matheson of Andrews: nine grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Ivie Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Donald Stiles of Route 1, Murphy, is on the Gardner Webb College football squad which is 2-0 for the season. His parents are Mr. and Mrs. Herbert H. Stiles. Wayman Wears Green & Gold BANNER ELK, N.C.Jackie Clarence Wayman, former Murphy Bulldog, now wears the green and gold of the Lees-McRae College Bobcats. Jackie is a freshman at Lees-McRae this year. He plays guard for the Bobcat Eleven and has seen some action in the young season. The Bobcats are 1-0-1, hav ing tied Chowan 6 to 6 beaten East Tennessee State's JV's 26 to 6 last week. The Cats have eight games yet to play. They entertain Gardner-Webb September 30 for Homecoming and play Newport News Apprentice, away, October 7; Carolina Military Academy, away Oct ober 14; Chowan, home, Oct ober 21;Gardner-Webb,away, October 28; Ferrum, home, November 18 at home. Wayman is the son of Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Wayman of Murphy. Mr. and Mrs. Vastine Ed wards and Sieve and Mrs. Lin da Purvis were the weekend guests of Mr and Mrs. Charles R. Garland and Sherry. -M The Archibald D. Mur phey Chapter of OAR met Monday evening, October 9, at the home of Mrs. Robert E as ley with Mrs. Be* Dona hue as co-hostess. The Re gent, Mrs. E as ley, presided over the business session whl-h followed the opening Ritual. the pledge of Allegiance to the Flag and the American Creed . Mrs. John Bayless gave a report on the District meeting which was held at Henderson vllle. The Chapter voted to contri bute to die fund for building a new Dormitory for Girls at Cross more School. The program "Safe in the Folds of the Flag" was given by Mrs. Jerry Davidson.
