Mr. and Mrs. Carroll Ashe of Murphy announce the en gagement of their daughter, Iris Juanita, to Johnny Freeman Thompson, son of Mrs. Jean Thompson of Blairsville Georgia. Miss Ashe is employment at Rimco of Murphy and Mr. Thompson is employed at Georgia Shoe of Blairs vi'le. Murphy Chapter of DAR met on Tues day evening February 20 at the Murphy Power Board building. Mrs. H. A. Mattox and Mrs. Hobart McKeever were host esses for the meeting. Tbe Regent, Mrs. Robert Easley, presided over the business session. After the Ritual and Pledge of Alii glance to tbe Flag, the meeting was turned over to the program chairman. In observance of Americas History month, the program was given by pupils who were prize winners in the American History Essay Contest spon sored by the DAR a total of 225 pupils participated in the contest. E. student at Murphy High Sch ool, placed third as Student of the Year in the annual Wes tern North Carolina Distri butive Education contest held at Plsgah High School in Canton. The purpose of the Student of the Year contest is to en courage the highest degree of individual student ac hievement in all D. E. program activities and in the total school program; and to give special recognition to those students who attain this degree of achievement.
