People & Issues
PRESIDENT ... A fight
for control of the Tar Heel
Delegation to the Democratic
National Convention in Chicago
could be brewing.
Some of the party leaders
have suggested that Governor
Dan K. Moore be given
"favorite son" support; others
headed by former Governor
Terry Sanford are opposing
such a move.
Sanford is one of the leaders
supporting Vice President
Hubert Humphrey for the nom
ination for president, and should
Humphrey be nominated Terry
Sanford might well be chosen
for Vice President in an attempt
to placate and carry the south
where neither Johnson or Hum
phrey, are popular.
As between Bobby Kennedy
Eugene McCarthy of Hu
bert Humphrey, the vice presi
dent appears to be the fav
orite in North Carolina.
With Sanford backing Hum
phrey it would appear that Gov
ernor Moore might have a real
fight on his hands should he
desire to go to the convention as
the "favorite son" candidate.
WILBUR MILLS . . Speaking
of candidates for president? a
A Voice In
The Wilderness
The consideration of our less
er brothers is a Christain nec
essity of the animals upon the
human race as a benefactor be
hoves each person to perform
an act of kindness. The cur
rent habit of setting out a dog
to fend for itself, especially
a female about to have a litter
is a degrading act and one to
be condemed. There is an old
saying in the mountains: "To
befriend an animal brings good
luck". I might add: "To neg
lect one, brings bad."
CARD OF THANKS
We would like to express our
thanks to Patrolman Patt

are also deeply grateful for the
kindness and sympathy of our

man who appears to be of pres
idential statue to our way of
thinking is Rep. Wilbur R. Mills
of Arkansas, chairman of the
powerful House Ways and Means
Committee. But it takes far
more than good qualifications to
be nominated for presidency by
wither the Democratic or Re
publican party. Rep. Mills is a
man who in our opinion the South
could well rally around as a
presidential candidate and who
might wind up as the man for
vice president, although we
frankly believe that Terry San
ford will have a better chance
at the number two spot? should
Humphrey be nominated for
president, which is far from
certain at this period of the
game.
NIXON . . Dick Nixon would
probably like to see the Dem
ocrats nominate Humphrey for
he could criticize him as being
part of the Johnson Administra
tion- -which he could not do if
Bobby Kennedy wins the nom
ination.
HUMPHREY. . . Hubert Hum
phrey Is an excellent speaker
and a good campaigner, although
he sometimes talks too long,
which is a liability of many
public speakers. Humphrey and
Nixon, both having served as
vice president, would be able
Candidates and a good match
for each other.
SHAD BAKE . . . The 24th
annual Shad Bake sponsored
by the Town of Aberdeen and
the Aberdeen L Rockfish Rail
road will be held in Aberdeen
on Friday, April 26th, honoring
State Highway Division Eight.
The shad bakes got their start
many years ago when the late
D. B. McCrary oi Asheboro
was Highway Commissioner and
had won the esteem of the Aber
deen Mayor and Town Com
missioners. Forest Lockery
was then mayor of Aberdeen
and is now President of the
Aberdeen & Rockfish Railroad
Co. with headquarters in Aber
deen. Jack Taylor is now mayor
of Aberdeen. While shad, roe,
and corn dodgers fiU the plate
politics will be the talk of the
some 300 in attendance.
DR. KING . . The man who
puUed the trigger of the gun
which fired the shot which killed
Dr. King no doubt thought that
he was doing something big to
stop the onslaught of civil rights
but he was only greasing the
skids for the passage of the
1968 civil rights bill which
otherwise might no have been
enacted.
By the same token, lawbreak
ers and hoodlums who burned
buildings and looted stores
throughout the nation were
simply planting seeds for a
backlash which is vocal
throughout the land.
DUKE ... We are in sym
pathy with the Duke University
students' concern over the $1.15
per hour wage being paid the
dining room workers. We feel
that their protest would be in
much better taste if they aired
their feelings in letters to the
Duke University President, the
Trustees, and in letters to the
newspapers.
The responsibility to correct
the situation lies with the
trustees and the administration.
I t is not the responsibility of
the student body. Their major
concern should be to make the
most of the opportunities offered
for learning at the institution.
The interest of the Duke Un
iversity student body in the wel
fore of the Dake employees.!
commendable, but we feel tlx
they are emphasizing their cafe
cern in the wrongway whenthie
disrupt the orderly operatloai
the institution. Duke's pay seal
for tis dining room workac
does not bring credit to the rlc
and heavily endowed univeru
and were are sure that befot
many months have passed U)
situation will be remedied.
