Will Entertain Lions Convention The Carolina Sweethearts of Murphy, under the direction of Mrs. Bobbie Stalcup, assisted by Dan W. Angel, were recent winners at the Hubert Hayes Mountain Youth Jamboree, in the senior clog division, held each year in Asheville. They will entertain June 6th in Gatlinburg, Tennessee at that state's 50th annual Lions Club Convention. Farm Land In County Decreases, Corn And Beef Production Up The total number of farm land and the number of acres harvested in Cherokee County showed a decrease from 1966 to 1967, but there was a sub stantial increase in the num ber of acres of corn harvested and the number of beef cattle. The figures are contained in the Preliminary 1968 County Commissioners Farm Census Summary compiled by the North Carolina and U. S. De partments of Agriculture, Crop Reporting Service. The number of persons liv ing on farm tracts in the county declined one percent to 4,896 people. The number of per sons living on farms and work ing 100 days or more in off farm jobs increased from 1, 101 to 1,228. Waldroup earned his masters degree in vocational industrial education, an increasingly im portant field in the effort to upgrade the skills of North Car olinians and to raise the per capita income of this State. Adams will be entering a profession in which the United States faces a severe manpower shortage. The Soviet Union has been outproducing this nation by a ratio of four to one in engineering graduates in recent years. Chancellor John T. Calwell conferred the degrees on Wald roup, Adams and other men and women who constituted the larg est commencement ever held at the land-grant University. Applauding the students were thousands of relatives, friends and professors who filled the balconies in Reynolds Coli seum. Children's Group Meets Monday Eric Brady of the North Car olina Council On Mental Retard ation will speak to the Cherokee County Association For Retard ed Children Monday night. Dairy cattle remained virtually unchanged, up to 991 from 988. 2 Receive Sentences In Federal Court Active prison sentences were handed down Monday in U. S. District Court at Bryson City in two cases originating in Ch erokee County. Oscar McClure, 48, of Mur phy, plead guilty to illegal pos session of non-taxpaid whisky. He was sentenced to six months in prison by Judge Wilson War lick. The Judge also directed that McClure be treated for alcoholism. In a related case, Warllck directed a verdict of not guilty to a similar charge against David Phillips of Murphy. Evid ence tended to show that Mc Clure had more than two gal lons of moonshine in a but owned by Phillips, but that Ph illips knew nothing of the wh isky. Richard Lee Opasik, 20, of Indiana, received a three year sentence on a charge of taking a stolen car across a state line. Opasik is presently listed as a deserter from the U.S. Army. He was arrested in Cherokee County in April with a car that was stolen in Vincennes, Ind iana.
