23,000 Given Speeding Tickets
RALEIGH - Almost 23,000
motorists were arrested by the
State Highway Patrol on the
charge of speeding during the
first two months of 1969.
Records of the Department
of Motor Vehicles show there
were 9,974 speeding arrests in
January and 10,780 in
February. The January figure is
209 per cent above that for the
same month last year. The
February figure is 32 per cent
higher than the monthly total
for 1968.
Patrol officials attribute the
increase in arrests to two
factors a stricter enforcement
program aimed at speeders and

VASCAR, which enables
State Troopers to clock the
speed of any vehicles within
visual range, was the downfall
of 10,012 speeders during the
two-month period. Radar
brought speeding tickets to
8,560 motorists, and speed
watches (cables) were
responsible for the arrest of
4,425.
Passenger cars and other
motor vehicles, exclusive of
trucks and buses, drew 20,754
of the 22,997 speeding
citations issued during the
period. Truck drivers received
2,224 speeding tickets during
January and February, and the
remaining 19 tickets went to
bus drivers.
