Taylor and three other Murphy men, Cline Hicks, David Hilton and Howard Carter were testing racing boats, particularly a 140 hp boat for a South Carolina client of Mr. Taylors. According to Hicks, the accident occurred when the boats driven by himself, Taylor and Hilton went into a slow left tum. Taylor was watching Hilton in the outside boat when his boat and Hicks drifted together. niCKa uuai uiiiiucu uitu uic drivers seat of Taylor's boat with the bow striking Taylor in the back of the head. Neither boat overturned. The accident took place about 500 yards from where Mr. Taylor had operated Elmo's Boat Dock for a number of years. Services for Mr. Taylor were held at 4 p. m. Friday in Murphy United Methodist Church, of which he was a member. The Rev. Thorton Hawkins and the Rev. John B. Harris officiated. Burial was in Grape Creek Baptist Cemetery. Masonic graveside rites were conducted by members of Cherokee Lodge No. 146. Pallbearers were Steve Dockery, Tommy Gentry, Harry Burgess, John Carringer, Jack Dickey, J. B. Brooks, Charles Whitener and Ralph Killian. Honorary pallbearers were members of the sixth district of North Carolina Highway Patrol. Surviving are the widow, Mrs. Jo Burrell Taylor; a daughter, Suzanne, and three sons, Jerry, Denver and Kurt Taylor, all of the home: the parents, Mr. and Mrs. Olen Taylor of Murphy; a sister, Mrs. Mildred Stillwell of Alabama; and the maternal grandmother, Mrs. W. F. Woods of Murphy. Townson Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Two Andrews Men Injured In Brawl A 49 year old Andrews president is in the Mission 'Memorial Hospital in Asheville in critical condition as a result of knife and gunshot wounds suffered Tuesday night. Russell Pearson, of Depot Street, Andrews, was first taken to the District Memorial Hospital by the Cherokee County Ambulance Service and then transferred to the Asheville hospital in critical condition as a result of several stab wounds and a gunshot wound. According to Andrews Police Chief, Milton Mashburn, Pearson was stabbed and shot at the home of 56 year-old Joby Cathey. According to authorities, Pearson and Cathey were drinking together in Cathey's home when the incident occured. Cathey was also carried to the District Memorial Hospital with knife wounds. Pearson's wife and J.B. Palmer are being held as material witnesses. According to authorities, the Pearson woman and Mr. Palmer were present when the incident occurred. Chief Mashburn said charges are being withheld until a complete investigation can be made. Kephart Wins 220 Yard Dash Kephart, a senior, qualified for the state meet by winning the 100 yard dash and placing ?econd in the 220 at Brevard in the District meet. Harold was voted '"Outstanding Track . Performer" for his performance in the Conference Meet. He < won the 220, 100, ran the t anchor leg in the winning 440 relay team, and placed second f in the broad jump. Harold Kephart, the ' outstanding track performer in the Smoky Mountain Conference, won the 220 yard dash in the state track meet with a time of 22.5 seconds. Voted "All SMC" and "Most Valuable Back" on the football, Harold has been an outstanding performer for the Bulldogs during his four years of High School. Kephart holds school records in the 100 yard dash and in the 220. His record time in the 100 is 9.8 seconds and 22.4 for the 220 yard dash. Chamber Budget Lagging; Additional Members Needed Tom Gentry, president of the Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce, told the Scout today that the organizations budget of $8,000 for the year 1969 is falling short of it's goal. Gentry emphasized the growth of the chamber and pointed out that additional members are needed to offset the expense of the ten major projects scheduled for this year. He also pointed out that payment of 1969 dues by current members would help balance the budget. The Chamber maintains an office on Peach tree Street with a full time secretary and also houses the Merchants Credit Association, Inc. Office hours are 9:00 to 5:00 Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, Wednesday 9:00 to 12:00 and Saturday 9:00 to 1:00. This year's ten Major projects of the Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce are: (1) Promote five retail sale? per year and Shop at Home Campaigns. (2) Publish a tourist promotion brochure. (3) Encourage the development of more off street parking facilities in the down town Murphy area. (4) Cooperate with the town of Murphy and county officials in helping to plan for present and future traffic. (5) Help groups whose function and purpose is the continuing development of the county and assist in their applications for loans or grants from federal, state and other sources. (6) Work for more housing, recreation, and community facilities, and establishment of County Dump Sites. (7) Cooperate with farm agencies and organizations to increase farm income of Cherokee County. (8) Co-sponsor a city beautification program with the Town of Murphy. (9) Co-sponsor an annual Christmas parade with the Murphy Jaycees. (10) Promote more Industry and Tourism in Cherokee County. Suspended on Continued Page 8 Murphy Woman Satisfactory Following Copperhead Bite Mrs. Julia B. Killian of Rt. 3 Murphy is listed in satisfactory condition at Providence Hospital following a Copperhead bite last Friday evening. Mrs. Killian, 76, said that she was walking toward her garden at approximately 7:00 p.m. Friday, and when she reached up to break a limb from a tree the snake struck her on the right leg just above the ankle. She said the snake was apparently lying in some bean sticks, stacked at the base of the tree. Mrs. Killian did not see a doctor until Saturday morning. She said that her leg began to swell after the bite and that she put table salt on the wound. She said that the pain began to worsen and that the ankle continued to swell, and she decided to go to a doctor. A nurse at the hospital said that Mrs. Killian leg was swollen badly when she came to the hospital Saturday. There are three types of poisonous snakes in Western North Carolina. They are Rattlesnake, Copperhead and Cottonmouth. North Carolina is the leading state in snakebite deaths per population, according to a Reader's Digest article. Stevens Signs Grant-ln-Aid Doug Stevens. senior linebacker, quarterback and place kicker, has signed a football, grant - in - aid with Mars Hill College Stevens, a three-year varsity starter, has been an outstanding performer for the liulldogs, being selected to the All-Conference team his junior and senior years. Standing five feet-eight inches tall and weighing 155 pounds, Doug showed fine leadership abilities and was voted the "Unsung Hero" of the '68 Bulldogs by the Murphy Quarterback Club. Doug will be used primarily as a placekicker at Mars Hill. Alexander Winner Of Declamation Contest Lawrence Alexander was the first place winner of the 14th annual Declamation Contest at Murphy High School Wednesday, May 14. Alexander won first place honors with his presentation of "Americans for America". Alexander wrote his own speech. Peden Gaines presentation of "I Believe" by John D. Rockfeller, Jr. took second place honors. Honorable mention went to Terry Puett for his presentation of "Death Bed of Benedict Arnold". Sam Elliott who placed first in last years contest was ' ineligible to win this year. ] Elliott's speech this year was < entitled "LEE" by Stephen j Vincent Ben net. I Other contestants in the contest were Bruce Coward with "I am An American"; Carlton Van Horn, President Roosevelt's Speech, December 8, 1941, asking Congress for declaration of war on Japan; Brian Coward "Churchill Anticipates the Battle of Britain"; Herbie Gibson, "Democracy The Hope of the World"; Terry Sanders "Visions of War"; Terry Newman, 'These Are The Times That Try Men's Souls"; Mike Godfrey, "The Gettysburg Address"; and Eddie Hughes 'The Return of the Confederate Soldier". The contest, directed by Joe Ray, is sponsored by the Daughters of American Revolution, Fort Butler Historical Society and the Joe Miller Elkins Post % of the American Legion. John Jordan presided at the program. The Rev. Woodrow Flynn, Honorable Fred Christopher and Honorable Herman Edwards served as judges.
