C & D INVESTIGATING ..
. When the C & D Industry
Investigating Committee was
announced a few weeks ago by
Roy Sowers we had some
misgivings about it.
However, after meeting with
the group during their visit to
the Sandhills we feel that the
mission is well founded and
should work for the best
interest of the state.
Whenever progress is made it
is sometimes made by stepping
on a few toes here and there
for awhile. The buggy makers
had their toes stepped on when
Henry Ford started
manufacturing Model T
automobiles and the mule
dealers had their toes stepped
on when tractors began to
replace the flop-eared mules in
the fields.
It is not every person who
can command the top hourly
wage in industry but those who
can should be given every
opportunity possible to
advance.
We feel that by utilizing our
technical institutes and
community colleges that here
in North Carolina we should be
able to attract more industry
that pays wages above the
prevailing average.
If we do not have the skilled
workmen that top-paying
industry requires the technical
institutes and community
colleges can well set up training
courses in cooperation with
industry to supply the required
labor needs.
We feel that Roy Sowers and
his C & D Committee are doing
some stirring and prodding that
is needed and timely and in a
manner nog designed to
embarass any community or
industry which would like to
have a part in raising the per
capita income in the area and
state.
ARCHIE DAVIS . ... Archie
Davis of Winston-Salem,
former state senator and
chairman of the board of
Wachovia Bank and Trust
Company is one of North
Carolina's leading citizens and
a man with his feet well
planted on Tar Heel soil and
devoted to the upbuilding and
best interest of North Carolina.
Last week in an able speech
before the N. C. Agribusiness
Council Davis hit hard at
inflation saying: ' Inflation lies
at the foot of the textile
import problem. It is forcing
our textile mills to price their
own products out of world
markets, while at the same
time pricing textile imports
into the U. S. Market." He
added that textile mills are
located in 81 of the state's 100
counties and they employ
approximately 280,000
workers who earn gross wages
in excess of $1.3 billion
annually.
The Winston-Salem banker
also hit out at the fight on
tobacco saying: "It is with
genuine concern we note the
increasingly aggressive attacks
upon tobacco by the federal
government and other public
and private agencies on the
health aspect."
SKIPPER BOWLES . . .
More and more it is beginning
to look like State Senator
Auxiliary
Plans Sale
The Providence Hospital
Auxiliary meeting on Oct. 14
made plana for a bake cale in
November to raise money for
the renovation at the hospital.
Mrs. Cloe Moore presided
and the treasurer, Mrs. Addle
Lewis, reported that eight
air-conditioners have been
purchased and installed at the
hospital. Funds for the
air-conditioners were raised
through the efforts of the
Auxiliary and outside
donations.
Meeting with the auxiliary
members were Sister Mary
Raphael, Hospital
Adminstrator, and Sister Mary
Angeline. The auxiliary holds
its meetings on the second
Tuesday morning of every
month.
Bake Sale
The ladies of the Led ford's
Chapel United Methodist
Church will hold a bake ale
and bazaar in Moa Memorial
Lfcrary on Saturday, Oct 26,
starting at 9 a.m. Beside bakery
items, they will have doll
clothes, jams and jell la for
sals. Proceeds will go into a
fund that they have
for the part
Hargrove (Skipper) Bowles will
be the candidate of the Terry
Sanford- Bert Bennett wing of
the Democratic Party for
governor in 1972.
Few doubt that Terry and
Margaret Rose would like to
occupy the governor's mansion
again, but many doubt that he
will take the plunge.
If Terry can stay close to the
governor, whoever he may
be-then should there be a
vacancy in the U. S. Senate
from North Carolina, he would
be in line to All the vacancy.
Some of those who have
been are are still close to Terry
feel that the best strategy may
be to push the able and capable
Greensboro senator for
governor in 1972. Reports are
that Bowles is giving serious
consideration to the idea of
running for governor, that he is
moving about the state
discussing campaign finances
and the advisability of running
for the top spot come running
time 1972.
MORATORIUM ... The
moratorium demonstrations
against our participation in
Vietnam was more orderly
than expected. The U. S.
feeling against our
participation in Vietnam drove
LBJ from the white house and
now it is beginning to haunt
President Nixon. We know that
it makes it rough on the man in
the white house to negotiate a
"face saving" peace when the
public is clamoring against our
further participation in
Vietnam.
It seems to us that the
U.S.A. has gotten itself in an
almost untentable position in
so far as negotiating an
honorable or face-saving peace
is concerned.
About the only honorable or
face-saving way is to deescalate
and fuDy Vietnamese the
fighting, and this is evidently
Nixon's plan to get us out of
the war. And this plan is too
slow and costly to satisify
many in the USA.
