Orr, believed to be the oldest active bear hunter in Graham Bear & Deer Plentiful, Boar Scarce TO CHECK cm the lack of luck reported by some early big game hunters this season, THIS MONTH sought information from the U. S. For est Service in the Santeetlah Wildlife Management Area. Assistant District Ranger Wayne Shepherd told us that bear hunting was exceptionally good this year In that area, because many bears apparently moved down from the Great Smoky Mountains National Park last year in the search for food. However, last year's mast failure--which brought the bears down from the Smokies has apparently had the opposite result on the boar population. MOTEL Year-Around ft* American Express Diners' Club Owned and Operated by Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians i CHEROKEE, N. C. Diet being an important factor in reproduction, wild boars did not have as many offspring. This year, with an over-abun dance of mast, the survivors of last year's famine and hunting are not moving around as much, but seem to stay in concentra ted groups in remote sections. Deer, on which the season opens November 24, are plenti ful this year. So are grouse, already in open season. Squirrels, however, are very scarce, as a result of their great migration into North Georgia last year because of the mast failure in this area. Possibly, as some people pre dict, the squirrels may return to the WNC mountains later in the season. In the meantime, squirrel hunters should seek their quarry in North Georgia.
