Backward Glance 4E TEARS AGO, NOV. 8, 1919 Tb# old Whitaker Church ?* fw Ant church organized in Cherokee County. It was tdahlUud in 1834 with ten members. The church is now known as the Valley River Church. The Peachtree Baptist Church was organized June 27 1839, with ten members, three males and seven females. The members were Jack Barker, M?ry Dalrymple, Elizabeth Hughes, Elizabeth Cook, Jr., Elizabeth Cook Sr., Elizabeth Young, John Timpson and Lucy Timpson. The last being Cherokee Indians. Murphy First Methodist Church was a wooden structure standing on the site of Harshaw Chapel. It was organized in 1842. The first lighting system used was tallow candles. In 1869, Joshua Harshaw erected and gave to the church the beginning on top of the mountain. South of town, known as the Harshaw Chapel. This building stood and was used by the church up until four years ago, when it was torn down and a new building erected. The Cherokee singing convention was first started at Murphy in 1894, with the organized singing class in the old Baptist Church. H. B. Elliott, of Peachtree, was president, and the late Uncle Joe Kimsey, who was one of the only two men in the county at the time that would lead the singing. Mrs.''J. H. Phaup and son are expected to return home Sunday. Mr. Allen Lovingood spent last Sunday with his wife at Gainesville, Ga. The "very first" roads in Cherokee County were probably made by buffalos, cows and wild animals. When the first settler was to build a new road they drove their cows or steers to the lowest gap on the side of the road was to be located on. The tracks were staked and the road located exactly on them. The first road ever constructed in Cherokee County was the Unicoi Turnpike in 1813. The road entered North Carolina near Hayesville and passed down the Hiawassee River through Murphy and over the Great Smoky Range into Tennessee. Hiawiwc river now flow* over part of this highway and a few old land marks may be seen. In the early 80's a railroad was a much talked of project. It was finally carried through from North Georgia into Murphy in May 1888. 30 YEARS AGO, NOV. 8, 1939 At exactly 5:20 o'clock Wednesday afternoon workmen threw the twitch on the new TVA tub station In Murphy, illuminating the entire city for the first time with electricity direct from the TVA power lines, which is and will be the permanent source of power for Murphy.
