May 14,21,28,June,4 Maps Ready For Distribution RALEIGH -- North Carolina's highway maps - possibly the most widely distributed piece of literature the state offers the public - have arrived at the Highway Building in Raleigh. H. Boyce Midgette, locating engineer with the State Highway Commission and the man who supervises the maps production, said that some 140,000 of the four-color 1970 maps are ready for distribution. The first press run is 400,000. A smaller supply of black and white maps will also be offered to those who prefer them to the colored maps, he said. i, Hie maps are offered, without charge, to the public and are stocked in such places as welcome centers and other public places. They can be obtained directly from Midgette's office in the Highway Building on Wilmington Street. A picture of Governor Bob Scott with a message from him urging highway safety is on one panel of the map. "We are always seeking through engineering progress to make them (highways) better," the message says, "but only the people who use them can make them safer." The map, as always, contains full color pictures of scenes depicting life in North Carolina. But in a departure from custom, this year the Highway Commission has pictures of two if ots own creations - Interstate 40 in the Pigeon River section of the mountains and the new lift span bridge at Wilmington.
