Girl Scouts Plan Events The Hiawassee Girl Scout Council held a Neighborhood Meeting at the Murphy Power Board on May 13 with Mrs. Herman Edwards, neighborhood chairman, presiding. She announced that Mrs. Harold Shook, who has long been connected with Girl Scout work, has accepted the position of troop organizer. The council has been without an organizer for sometime. The following delegates were elected to the next annual meeting: Mrs Harold Shook, Mrs. E.U. Burch, Mrs. Joseph El-Khouri, Mrs. W. A. Singleton, and Mrs. Steve Brogdon. A Scamper for Juniors at Appletree is scheduled for this month. The Andrews Junior Troop plans to attend. A day camp, "Con Amigo6", will be held near Marble on July 13-17 and a training program is available for last year Cadettes and Seniors at Camp Pisgah on June 8-11. The Murphy Cadettes have scheduled a Cou-t of Awards for this month. The chairman announced that the Andrews Junior Troop won 8th place in the Cookie Sales contest; Murphy Brownie Troop 474 came in 12th; and the Murphy Junior Troop and Andrews Cadette and Senior Troops exceeded the national average of 27 boxes per girl and were winners of a Dutch Oven. Stewardship Crusade Starts la Clay The United Methodist Churches in Clay County have joined in a countywide effort to strengthen the church in a more effective stewardship program. The Rev. Rollln P. Gibbs from the Methodist Conference's Department of Finance and Field Service is directing the stewardship crusade. The effort is aimed at helping members of Clay churches meet the budget needs of their local churches and expand the world minions program. NAOMI SPRUNG, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J.R. Sprung of Murphy, was recently elected parliamentarian of the University Speech and Hearing Association at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. A Junior, she is majoring in speech pathology and audiology. JtANl BALLEW has been named valedictorian of the graduating class of Riviera Beach High School in West Palm Beach, Fla. She is the daughter of former Murphy residents Mr. and Mrs. Grady Ballew and the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. R.T. Stiles of Route 2, Murphy. Methodist Circle Meets Circle No. 3 of the United Methodist Church held its monthly meeting Thursday, May 21 at the home of Mrs. Joe Little in Peach tree. Mrs. Charles Noble, chairman called the meeting to order and after a short business session the members discussed a fund raising project to donate money to the Murphy Hospital Authority. Mrs. Bill Owens gave a devotional program on "To Love and To Cherish", also a special prayer was said for the son of one of the members who is very ill. During the social hour the hostess served refreshments to the following: Mrs. Charles Noble, Mrs. Max Blakemore, Mrs. Louise McGuire, Mrs. Bill Owens and Miss Jo Jo Moody. Librarians Attend Workshop A workshop for public librarians was held at the Moss Memorial Library in Hayesville on Wednesday of last week. Miss Nancy Wallace, Young Adult Services Librarian from the North Carolina State Library, Raleigh was principal speaker. She brought books, films, and tapes to illustrate her work with young adults in the public library.
