(Staff Photo) TO THE MEMORY OF ELMER TAYLOR I was not close I saw him twice a year at most to get a dead Johnson five brought back alive by skill and magic. He'd put it in a big tank and (just like I did, or so I thought) he'd pull the crank but where I only got a wheeze, his big brown arm would make it purr he'd call it bad names when it died, and "darlin" when it worked. Pale green fishing boats and memories with his name painted on drift happy in the morning fog of Hiwassee. Jan A. Davidson June 2, 1969 Written by Jen Davidson and given to Mrs. Elmer Taylor Memorial Service Set In Graham The annual Veterans Memorial Day service will be held Sunday morning at 11 o'clock in the Sweetgum Baptist Church at Robbinsville under the leadership of the American Legion. It is the 10th year the Robbinsville church has held a service to honor the dead of all wars. All churches, servicemen and families of servicemen in the area are invited to participate in the service. Leonard W. Lloyd, Robbinsville attorney and Marine combat veteran of World War II, will deliver the memorial address entitled "Stand UP For America." Baptists Pick Design For Church Contemporary, modified architecture was chosen Sunday as the style for the new building planned by First Baptist Church. Five different designs were submitted by the architect, Robert Daniels of Brevard. On Sunday afternoon they were on display, and members had the privilege of studying them and expressing a preference. According to the pastor, the Rev. Woodrow Flynn, the decision was almost unanimous for the style chosen. The new church will be built in West Murphy. All of the building will be on ground floor level. It will have approximately 33,000 square feet of space, accommodating 500 in the worship services and 500 in educational organizations. The construction will be of brick with a pitched shingle roof. It will have laminated beams in the auditorium to support the roof and a Gothic type ceiling. Some of the stained glass windows from the old building will be re-mounted and used. The auditorium will have a bell tower and spire on he roof. The interior of the auditorium will be finished with Roman brick and decking and have an elevated n??r- Each end wi" have a tall window reaching all the way to the roof. The education building will be of brick tod block construction with a hip roof and will be in a general "U" shape with a court in the center. Full facilities are planned for all age groups. There will be two shelters for loading passengers, and parking spaces for 175 cars. The auditorium and parts of the education building will be air conditioned. There will be a recreation hall with a seating capacity of over 250 at tables. The present schedule calls for contracts to be signed in August and occupancy within a year. Wachovia Bank has purchased the church s property on Peachtree Street and plans to tear the old church building down and put up a new bank building on the site. Students from Cherokee County receiving an award this year include Barbara I. Guffy, Clara B. Hicks, Debra L. Martin, and Emily C. Witt. Donald Cotton, scholarships coordinator with the State Department of Public Instruction said that some 2,300 students applied for the loans this year. This year's recipients, ranging from graduating high school seniors to college juniors, are or will be enrolled in 48 North Carolina colleges. Most of the recipients, he said, were in the upper 25 percent of their prospective class rank. Some $1,321,000 will be distributed this year to all the students in the scholarship program. The program began in 1957 with 300 awards and has been increased steadily since. The 1969 General Assembly, according to Cotton, raised the fund by some $300,000 for the 1969-70 biennium. The fund will benefit a total 2,500 students during these two years. Some 427 of the recipients have chosen to study elementary education. "We feel this is particularly encouraging," said State School Superintendent Phillips, "in view of the findings of recent research that shows a chronic shortage of adequately prepared teachers at the elementary school level."
