C. - PHONE 837-5139 The Hayesville High School football and basketball teams should be off to a running start this Fall with the cheerleaders giving them a boost that has not been heard in previous seasons. Five of the seven cheerleaders have returned home from a week's streneous training at the International Cheer Leading Foundation at Georgia Southern College in States boro, Ga. The cheer leaders who attended were Misses Ann Kelley, Becky Penland, Glenda Payne, Debbie Bristol and Mildred Payne. The days started for the girls at 6 a.m. and ended with lights out at 11 p.m. According to Debbie Bristol, they were really ready for bed. She said the food was delicious. They had to walk for (what seemed like miles) and were famished by the time they got to the cafeteria. They started practice early in the day and with the extreme heat got to stop for time out long enough for three showers each day. According to the girls the heat was something terrible. Could be that these mountain girls had not been exposed to such hard work in the flat lands of Georgia and were not used to it. Well any way Debbie says that when they got back to the mountains they started yelling louder than they had in any of their training for never had the mountain breezes felt so good or the mountains looked so beautiful before. Congratulations girls for going and getting ready for the ball season this fall. We are just as anxious to hear and see what you learned, as you all are to get into to your cheer leading uniforms to show us. I learned two things from Clay County Chatter By Mrs. Neal Kitchens Mrs. Gordon (Betty) Chastain last week. One is the fact that the price of baby sitting has gone up considerably in the past 39 years and also how to put on a thoroughbred horse show when you don't even have a horse. According to Betty...39 years ago she had a job baby sitting for Mr. and Mrs. John Sawyers, six days a week with their three children for $1. per week. The going price today is about $1. per hour. Well Betty said that she had one of the thrills of her entire life last week when Joe Sawyers, one of the children she had cared for in the Sawyers home drove up with a van and his wife Kathryn and two thoroughbred horses enroute to Winston-Salem where he would be riding in a rodeo. They came all the way from Oklahoma where they own a big ranch and breed these horses. A colt sells for $1500 when six months old and these two horses they had with them were $4,000 horses. Betty said they were wrapped like babies and coddled by their owners in the same way. Joe and his wife were on their way to visit his Uncle Glenn Sawyers in Hayesville and stopped to see her. She couldn't believe little Joe had grown to be a man. Time flits by and children grow up. She said, "If you all will stay for dinner, 111 cut a ham and make some good biscuits."Joe said, "Well what are we waiting for? Go ahead, we will bed down the horses and let them rest". Word soon got out to the horse lovers in this section and the Chastains soon had a big horse show for not many had seen horses so fine as these. According to Betty it was some sight when they got them in their dress-up bridles, saddles, etc. After a great visit and a lot of reminiscing of former days the Sawyers were on their way. In departing Joe said "Betty keep out that welcome, for weary travelers". I will conclude with this: For those of us who know Betty the advice was not necessary for she keeps out the welcome mat all the time any way. I hope all the people appreciate the Operation Mainstream headed by Clyde Dayton this Summer for the beautiful work they have been doing at the cemeteries in the county, painting the courthouse, cleaning and keeping the square in shape and many, many other nice projects in the county. I was talking to Clyde Dayton this week and he said he has turned the job over to Mr. Odis tothera and Clifford Dills who will direct the job for the coming months. Here I want to express my personal appreciation to Clyde for getting the work all organised. I notice all the men do a nice, neat job. There are too many for me to give personal mention to all; but I particularly noticed Gumery Moss as he crawled from through the cemeteries doing such a neat job trimming. This helps to make the job perfect. I believe Gumery is about 77. These men take pride in their work and are to be commended. Speaking of the court house, have you noticed the beautiful flowers on the corners that are now beginning to bloom nicely? nils is a project by the day bounty Homemakers Extension dubs. Adding this to Operation Mainstream's efforts the qua re is beautiful. It always ooks so nice and clean. Operation Mainstream cleaned xit three truck loads of pigeon itter from the courthouse jelfery in the spring. The ladies i the club utilized this by using t as fertilizer for the Bowers. I was delighted with the inside joint job and the outside rimming of paint on the windows, eaves etc. Now all we wed to add the frosting to the take is to paint the court house i new brick red.
