Signs carrying printed words will give way to signs showing symbols, and the motorist is going to have to learn what those symbols mean if he is to drive intelligently and safely. It's all a part of an attempt by the Federal Government to standardize signs all over the country, and to do so the Department of Transportation has adopted a modified version of the international road signs for use in the United States. This will be no small task in North Carolina, where an estimated one million signs will have to be replaced. But it isn't going to bankrupt the state treasury because there isn't going to be any mass movement to take down the old signs and put up the new. Rather the state will adopt a general policy ol replacing 1 a sign that wears out or is shot up by vandals EXISTING NEW SLIPPER^ WHEN WEJ/ pEDESTRIAn VCROSSING/ /LOW CLEARANCE) \l2ft 6y/^ 12-6'y DO NOT PASS WCN YELLOW LINE BMYOUtUHE 00 NOT PASS | WHEN SOLD YELLOW | LINE BM TOUR LAME I HOOL 'school^ .CROSSING, DEER^ XRQSSING, Rescue Squad, Fire Officers Picked In Clay "Die Clay County Rescue Squad met Monday night to elect new officers for the coming year. North Carolina, widely known as "The Good Roads State", has the largest state administered highway system in the United States. There are almost 74,000 miles of state roads here, almost enough road mileage to circle the earth three times. i seen any of these lately?) with uneof the new symbols. Some of this has already started and more and more of the new signs will be seen in the weeks and months ahead. The state has until 1974 to complete the project. There is a definite safety factor in the project to change the signs, if the experts are correct. Motorists, they say, can react more quickly to a symbol theya understand than they can to a'sign that carries a printed message, saving maybe three or four car lengths at 55 miles per hour. Some of the new signs won't be any trouble to recognize. The old sign that says "School Crossing" will be replaced by a pentagonal sign with a picture of two children Wildcat Club Reorganized The Andrews football Booster Club, The Wildcats, is planning its activities for the coming season. Everyone is urged to be on hand for their first meeting July 20th, at the Vocational Building at Andrews High School for the announcement of plans crossing the highway. Only signs dealing with schools are pentagonal. Motorists will have to learn that a sign showing a red circle means "don't do that". For instance, a sign with an arrow curving to the right but with the red circle and slash imposed upon it means "No Right Turn". If it shows the slash, circle and a U-Turn sign, it means "No U Turn". A sign that says "Deei Crossing" will replaced by a symbol showing a bounding deer. A sign that says "Hill" will be replaced by a sign showing a truck going down a steep incline. And so on. The actual work of replacing the signs will be under the supervision of the Traffic Engineering Department of the StaU Highway Commission, bul many other state agencies will be involved. The Department of Motoi Vehicles, for instance, which gives tests to driver's license applicants, will have to revise those tests to include the new symbols. * And there will have to be 1 huge educational program ag the part of the state, with tH assistance of the news medi* to see that the motoring publif becomes familiar with the new driving guides. ? But when the job i; accomplished, a driver will be able to travel the length and breadth of the nation and set the same highway symbol} everywhere he goes. , SEWING MACHINES - VACUUM CLEANERS SALES-SERVICE-REPAIRS SINGER SEWING CENTER For home service call or see ECONOMY SEWING MACHINE CO.
