The newly organized colored club, under the name of Swiftfoots, have challenged the Charlotte colored club. Gbldsboro Chamber of Commerce. The Sscrerary of State has issued let ters of incorporation to the Goldsboro Chamber of Commeice. A Dangerous Wire. The electric light wires entering Judge Roberts' office acres Davie street are in a dangerous condition. They need at tention. Mayor's Court. Mayor Russ to-day fined one party $12.25 for disordered conduct, and an other $87.25 for the same offence. State Taxes. Auditor Ayer complains that the coun ties of Halifax, Currituck, Surry and Person are behind in reporting State taxes this year. The Joshua Simpkins Co. The Joshua Simpkins Company, which will appear at the Metropolitan Opera House on next Friday night, travels in a special Pullman car of their own. Sent to Goldsboro. An Inquisition of lunacy was held this morning by Justice H. H. Roberts of Maria Pierce, colored, and she was com mittcd to jail awaiting admission to the Eastern Hospital, at Goldsboro, N. C. Ward, who has been attend lng the Supreme court, returned to New bern this morning. Mr. W. 0. Kimball, the gentlemanly ticket agent of the Seaboard, is visiting in Moncure. Mr. C. H. Gattis is holding the fort in his absence. Mrs. Wall, at the residence of Mrs Jas. Carroll, on north Harrington street, still continues quite ill. Mrs. Cirroll is improving very slowly. Detective Held for Wife Murder. New York, Oct 11. Central Office Detective William Moore, whose wife was fonnd dead in her kitchen last week, was arrested Saturday on supicion of having murdered her. The woman's death was caused by a stab wound in the abdomen. In the burial permit ob tained by Moore, beart failure was given as the cause of death. Neighbors furn ished information to the police which led to an investigation. Shot In the Street by a Lawyer. Wilmington, Ohio. Oct. 11. A sensa ( tional shooting affray created great ex citement on the street Saturday after- noon when J. 0. Martin, of the law firm of Sloane, Martin & Clevenger, shot, and it is thought, mortally wounded George McMillan. Mirtin shot three times, two of the bullets taking effect Bad feelirg hat existed between the two for months over the settlement of an estate of which Mar , tin la the administrator and McMillan's wife one of the heirs. MuiJn fled to his ' office, where he was arrested. ' Sugar Beet Culture a Success Here. Mr. W. E. Worth showed at tho Wil mtngton Messenger office yesterday even ing a fine statesmen of German sugtr beets grown on his place abont four miles from the city. List spring he re ceived some seed from the United States Agricultural Department, with which to make an experiment. He planted them the 18ih of May on one-eighth of an acre of land, and the yield has been about 700 bushels per acre, They were planted on fresh land that has never been in cnltivation before, and he is sat Med that cultivated land will produce still better results. The three beets which Mr. Worth showed ns weigh six pounds and he tells us that they were selected as an average of the crop produced. On Saturday he will ship a sufficient quantity of beets to the Agricultural Department at Wash ineton. to be analyzed in accordance with the proposition made by the de partment in its efforts to encourage the culture of the sugar beet in America. Leutgert is Very Bitter. Chicago, 111 ..Oct. 11. Luetgertto day expressed himself very bitterly on the State's treatment of his witnesses. He raiterated his statement that he believes his wife to bo alive, and that he is an innocent man, the victim of uigust per secution. He characterized the witnesses for prosecution as falsifiers, and said he believed Dr. Allport had forgotten more about bones than Prof. Dorsey ever knew. : . . The attorneys on both sides spent the day in outlining their arguments before the jury next week. The Luetgert trial has inspired a local playwright to write a play entitled "The Sausage Maker of L:ke view." It i pre mier production will be given at a Mil waukee avenue theatte on Sundry night One of the characters is called May, an other is a nameless widow, and the prin cipal male character is to made np to represent Laetgert Mrs. Luetgert's name does not appear in the cast of characters. If the play succeeds the ambitions author will try to secure for the title role, Mr. Litgert himself, provided, of course, the sausaee maker is not convicted. Special Notices.
