Frank Stanton's Column r (Atlanta Oonstifu&oiu) THE WOODEN-LEG BRIGADE. In case it's war, an' trouble " ' la this iliOTe eoutry's mrade, Whut will they do vrth them ol boys- The wooden-leg .brigade? Tliey've 'had but little pensions They're laid out In the shade; So whiut is ter !beoomie o' them The wooden-leg Brigade? I wean these gray-haired toilers That follered Gin'ml Lee, An' itmaide a stan' for this here kin' ... When. Sherman Miade for 'sea; Per when the .war wuz over An' tei'ius o' peace w mode, Tlie state, it said: "They fit an' blwl- Tliiia -wooden-kig Ip-igadc; . "But now, they're kinder crippled An-' laid up on the shelf; God for us all from spring ter fall, An' each man fer ihimseJf!" ' That's wlnit the state said, brothcriu'- Jest left 'em in the shade, Wiitli not a k'aky shelter ' Fer the wooden-leg brigade! So that'll guv'inent do with 'em? I'm very niiK'h afraid Thar won't be iny places : i Fer tlhe wooden-leg brigade Thc'U never git no ieii(ious: Away from earth they'll fade An' the tale'U say: "God rest 'em Tlrat ol' wooden-leg brigade!" A GUX WITH A GRIM .HISTORY. A correspondent "who fit through the war" writes: "Will a man be allowed to carry the gun he prefers in the war? I have one that saw service in every .battle of the late war, and wlhich, ' to my certain knowledge, has killed 120 men. 1 car ried a notebook with me the first two years of the war and kept count, till it ot to be such an ordinary thing that 1 last interest in it. But I know that it hius killed 120, and that it is in as goo.l fighting trim now as it was then. I have come to haveu affection for it, and if I enlist I hope they'll let me car ry it with. me. It's getting rusty and needs exercise." TAKE YOUR TIME. "Take your time, take your time!" So the Spanish steeples chime, "There isn't any need at ay, to hurry! It was core that killed a cat, And you mustn't die like that; Take your time, gentle neighbor don't you worry!'' Take your time, take your time!" So the bells of Madrid chime, "'There isn't any need of all the flurry! Take your time u-danciu' .Tuba. 'Till my (chips are massed at Cuba, ' Take your time, gentle neighbor don't you hurry! , "Take your time, take your time Till the fire-bells shall chime, And for cover you at hint are forced to ..scurry; Till I get my fleet in order And I'm buttering your border. Take your time, gentle neighbor don't you hurijy!'.' "I'itACIN'G" THE COLORED VOTE. "Dis Iheult 'publican party is ez sharp cz a steel trap," said the old . colored voter, "but I done see clear thoo it uow I see how tie rabbit jump!'' "Why, what's up now?" , "Well, endurin' er do 'ieekshun dey promiao do cullud voters places, didn't dey?" "That's what!" "En now dey gwine ter keep dey prom ise ain't dey?" "I don't know." "Oh, yea, you dors! Ever' cull ml voter is gwine ter git a place in do army, whar he kin git kilt off, on say no mo' 'bout it!! Oh, dey gwine ter keep dey prouiise Uey'll 'place' ever' blessed one er dein right In front er do battle. Lawd bless dey sebemin' souk!" TUB LITTLE IJOY-KIXG. . - ' The little boy-king is a handsome fellow, With his curling hair and his sash of yellow; ' And he knows that America Won't do a thing To a little boy-king! The little boy-klug Is a war-like chap,.-" With hits clanking sword and his shoulder-strap; 'And ho shakes his rattle, and makes it sing For nobody'll trouble a little boy-kin,?!! But, little boy-king, y m had better watch out! There are gobble 'mis projickin' round about! If he Wt real .quiet, they won't do a thing To fiie little boy-king! J. XJIT5 FROM fits TIP TO Defies Competition ThisSide of New York. Old FoDA It really looks as if Spain mean busi ness when the little boy-king is spirited away and tucked up in his cradle in a safe place. No wich precautions have been taken in regard to the president, though Spain (has threatened to land a force at Key West, march to Washing ton, capture end cage him and exhibit him for the benefit of the Spanish navy! Verily, we are sleeping on our rights! A North Carolina man took the scalps of two Mormun elders who left tracts at nis house, and two others narrowly escaped tor and feathers for the same offense. The ; elders arenow making tracks from these diggin's. The doctors find it .difficult to keep down the war fever in some sections. Cold lead in torpedo eapsulesi is said to be the only remedy. F. L. S. TO RAISE TOBiACCO OX A LARGE " S'CAILE. ; (Wilmington Messenger.) 'Mr. Peter K. Post, Jr., of New York, was in the city yesterday on his return from Bauueriduu's Bridge, in Tender county, on- the North East 'river. Mtr.IVsthasiurtihasH.Hl;theplaiiitati'uin Mr. Post lias purcluised the plantation known as tflie Hear Garden, formerly owned by the late 'Col. E. I). Hall, of Wilmington. The track contains 10,000 acres of fine lands and it is located about, two wiles from Mr. J. R. Bunnermnn's place, ten miles' from Burgaw and thirty miles from Wilmington. It htas water couiniuiiieatiou with Wilmington by the North East river. Mi'. Post is Making preparation to raise tobacco on a large scale. He will establish a colony of about COO thrifty people on his pkico, and will soon bring out a Tiumlier of Italian and other lab oreiw to get his hands in order. He expects to begin operations right away. The Bear Garden property has been owned by several persons since Colonel Hall owned it. Mr. Post purchased it from its last owner, Mr. II. B. Newton, of Haverhill, Mass. SIIOL'LD MOVE AT ONCE. Wilmington Messonger. It is to be hoped that the United States government will take immediate steps to afford protection to Beaufort and Morehead in tlii State. Prior to the war Fort Macon, of the old style, stood ready to be used if dangers threat ened. The wnr department should at once put defences at the entrance to these towns that will give the Spanish ships trouble if they do not keep them away entirely. It will be very neglectful and unmerciful indeed to 'leave the in habitants of those towns and the peo ple living on water courses adjacent, without the best available protection. While. North Carolina militia are to be called out at the sound of the first toc sin, nnd her steamers are to be used for war purposes, let the Federal authorities not overlook the present defenselessness of the towns indicated. . "SOUND AND FURY." Farmer's Friend. If Governor Russell moans to back track m his fight for lower rates, he might as well have left the Wilsons in possession of the commissioner's office. The contest lie made with such vigor and in the eye of the whole State will be written down as one "of sound and fury, signifying nothing." Alas for him if such is to be the end. LEADS THE STATE. Newbern Journal. The Raleigh news and Observer in its make up and news matter leads the press of the State, to-day. Its display heads and presentation of latest news items are the best of any newspaper pub lished in North Carolina, It is strictly metropolitan in appearance.
