Raleigh, N. C., Nov. 5. Estimated returns from 65 of the 100 counties in North Carolina indicate that nine of the ten constitutional amendments have carried, with the Tax amend ment, against which the greatest op position had been directed, in doubt, Two-thirds of the counties heard from gave the amendments, ! excepting that on taxation, majorities, but the figures were mainly estimates. J. W. Bailey, chairman o the cam paign committee which sought to se cure the adoption of the amendments, gave out a statement tonight in which he claimed that all the amendments were carried. j" Raleigh. N. C Nov. 4. Democratic State Chairman Thomas D. Warren said tonight that belated returns straggling in today have in no way changed his conception of the outcome of the election as expressed iast night, and he estimated the Democratic ma jority at 30,000, with a very ( light vote throughout the State. Democratic headquarters closed this afternoon, Secretary J. R. Collie leav ing for his home and Chairman War ren to leave for New Bern tomorrow. He expects to be back in ' Raleigh within a few days to finish and settle up the affairs of the campaign. Commissioner of Labor and Print ing M. L. Shipman, today returned from the Tenth district where he went a week ago to assist in the .'campaign. Congressman Gudger's patronage troubles, the two bitter primary con tests, the condition of the lumber bus iness in the far , western counties, the cotton situation in Rutherford and base misrepresentation of the Wilson administration generally, j are the main causes which have contributed largely to his defeat, says Mr. Ship man. ' ' Bu.inesp degression was worked over time and pitiful stories were poured into the ears of the unemploy ed around manufacturing centers and in logging camps. He says hundreds of Democrats evidently failed to vote at all and have only themselves to blame for the loss of the district. Informa tion reaches here of a destructive fire at Farmville.Pitt county, j 60 miles from New Bern,' on the Norfolk-Southern railway, early tonight, j warehouse property and tobacco valued at from half to three-quarters ofj a million dollars having been destroyed. j The fire originated in the Banner warehouse, destroying this one, the Planters' warehouse and the large storage warehouse of the American Tobacco Co., all of which were filled to overflowing with the weed after big breaks at the warehouses today. The loss is said to be only partially c red by insurance. ; -' ' ; Early in the fire, the; local fire fighting appartus is said to have gone out of commission and the flames swept madly through the j warehouse district of the town, destroying sta bles, a couple of fine horses belonging to the warehouse companies and Pip kins' grocery store in the town prop er. Crump ler, of Sampson County, his Republi can opponent, according to official re turns, v ' ' ' . Latest returns from yesterday's election indicate that the Democratic majority in the House of Representatives for the 64th Con gres3 will be reduced to 18. The prob able Democratic majority in the Sen ate will be 14. Democrats have elected 226 mem bers, Republican 192; Progressives 10; and Socialists 1. Of the six missing districts, it wa3 estimated tonight that the! Republicans and Democrats might elect three each. Heaviest Republican gains were 13 in Illinois; 12 in New York; 10 in Pennsylvania, and nine in Ohio. Pro gressive representation in the House was cut from 19 to nine or ten. Contests which were so close that they could not be definitely determined at a late hour tonight were In two dis tricts in Colorado, one in New Jersey, two in Kansas and one In" North Caro lina.. - In the sixth California district J. A. Elston. Progressive, led Geo. H. Der rick, Republican, by a slight margin. Democratic leaders claimed the elec tion of H. H. Seldomridge and Edward Keating in the second and third Colo rado districts. Representative Wil liam E. Tuttle, Jr., of the fifth New Jersey district, was in danger of los ing! his seat to John H. Capstick, Re publican, but; his supporters claimed his election. . Republicans claimed victory for W. A. Calderhead and John B. Dykes in the1 fifth and sixth Kansas districts and for J.J. McGee, her many friends will be concerned to know, is a pa tient in Theroldsbaro Hospital, with fever. We all wish her a speedy re- covery. , Dr. P. W. Covington, of the State Board of Health, is in the city, and will spend some time officially in this county, among the schools and com mittees of towns and rural districts. Seven British warships, apparently dreadnoughts, neaaing ror the Panama canal and steaming at full speed, were sighted off the Bahama Islands lr.st Friday by passengers on the United Fruit Line steamship Suriname, which arrived to day from Santiago, Cuba. James Cav- anaugh, one of the passengers, form erly a lieutenant in the British navy, expressed the opinion that the British fleet was bound for the Pacific coast of South America to avenge the de feat of the British fleet of cruisers by German ships.
