According to estimates prepared by government! bureaus the population of continental United States js now approximately 100,000,000. Geograph er C. B. Sloane figures to a nicety, and if his estimate is accepted the popula tion will be 100,000,051 on April 2. J. S. McCoy, of the treasury depart ment, who is an actuary of high rep utation, calculates that the population will be 100,016,010 on February 1. The census bureau estimates a population in round numbers of 108,000,000 in 1920. The United States naturally grows at a faster rate than any other great country. Large tides of immigration have accounted, of coursefor the phe nomenal increase. In 1790, when the first census was taken the population of the United States was only '3,92 9, 214. In 1860, just before the civil war, the population was 31,443,321. In the census of 1900 this country's pop ulation was 75,994,575, and in 1910 it was 91,972,266. In the last census it was found that we had a native white population of 66,389,104, and of negroes 9,828,294. Other large nations have various alien elements, and they are slow of assim ilation. The Russians seem to be taking the war seriously, even if the young men of England do not. - In the Sunday newspapers the im aginations of- the war correspondents are given wide latitude. . There is still a difference of opinion as to whether the Zeppelins are a great success or a total failure. Mr. Fairbanks is said to be dream ing pleasant dreams fehout 1916. -There's a superior brand of optimism for you! FOR BENT OR LEASE. In the Balkan states there are many peoples of di verse traits and of different ancestral stocks.; f . ; " . . Many good Americans have feared that unless immigration were greatly restricted the United tates would lose its so-called Anglo-Saxon domi nance and that American ideala and distinctly American characteristics would suffer if not be altogether over borne. - Such fears were absolutely groundless. America just as it has been in the past and as it is today with its millions of foreign born in habitants estimated now at about 16,000,000, and nearly 20,000,000 of foreign born parents. . Those of the second generation of all foreigners prove to be patriotic Americans, and the third generation has hardly a trace of old world ties. i Of the European nations Russia, with its vast territory, easily leads all the others in population. Accord ing to a recent census Russia in Eu rope has a population of about 141, 000,000. Including Sibejriai and its other Asiatic possessions, the Russian empire has a grand total of 171,000, 000. The population of the German empire is 65,000,000. France has a population of 40,000,000, and the Unit ed Kingdom Great Britain and Ire landhas a population of 46,000,000. WISHED SHE COULD DIE And Be Free From Her Troubles, but Finds Better Way; Columbia, Tenn. "Many a time, says Mrs. Jessie bnarp, of this place. "I wished I would die and be relieved Of my buffering, from womanly troubles. I could not get up, without pulling at something to help me, and stayed in Ded most of the time. 1 could not do my housework. -f The least amount of work tired ma out. My head would swim, and I would tremble for an hour or more. Finally, I look Cardui, the woman's tonic, and I am not bothered with pains any more, and I don't have to go to bed.
