Trenton Finals Begin Thursday. With Concert By Glee Club and Choir The Trenton Commencement will get under -way when the combined glee club and the "Or pheus Boys’ choir give their con cert in the-High School Auditor ium, Thursday evening May 19, at 8:15. The following Sunday eve ning, May 22, at 8:15, Reverend J. A. Evans of the Free Will Bap tist Orphanage will preach the Baccalaureate Sermon. On Friday evening, May 27, at 8:15 p. m. Senator D. L. Ward will deliver the address to the graduating class. The Eighth Grade is busy working on its graduation exer cise to be presented Friday morn ing, May 27. Sue Brock Jones is the Valedictorian; Annie Lee Wooten ran her a close race with less than a half point difference in their averages. The Class will receive certifi cates for their elementary school work. The public is cordially in vited to all these exercises. Bruce Johnson Named Commander Legion Post Clen Newton'Smith Post No. >154 held its regular monthly meeting May 9 on the Legion Field, Trenton. The following officers were elected: „ % Bruce Johnson, Commander; Clifton Pollock, First Vice Com mander; Nelson Bank, Second Vice Commander; Rogers Pol lock, Adjutant; G. N. Noble, Fi nance Officer; Nixton Mallard, Sergeant-at-Arms. W. C. Flowers, Sr., reported on plans of State Convention to be held June 18-21 in Raleigh. Aft er discussion the following dele gates were appointed: W. C. Flowers, Sr., Chairman; W. C. Flowers, Jr., L. S. Meiggs, Elridge Sumrell. AUXILIARY MEETING The Clen Newton Smith Post No. 154 held its regular monthly meeting Monday night, May 9, with twelve members present. The flags were advanced and the meeting was called to order by the unit president, Mrs. Dal ton Cox. The Auxiliary song, “The Star Spangled Banner”, was sung, after which the Auxiliary was led in prayer by the chaplain, Mrs. Carl Flowers, Sr. The roll call and minutes of the last meeting were read and approved. The treasurer’s re port was given by the secretary. Reports were given from the different committees concerning the making of the posters for the poppy sale and the way the poppies were to be distributed. Program and refreshment committees were appointed for the next regular meeting. The meeting was closed with the song of “Old North State”. Delicious refreshments of chicken salad, pimenta cheese sandwiches, coca-colas and cook ies were served by Mrs. Carl Flowers, Sr., and Mrs. Bill John son. Clagon’s Arrests During the past week High way Patrolman W. S. Clagon made four arrests. Two were on charges of speeding and the oth er two were on charges of driv ing without license. Both the speeding drivers were out-of staters: Walter Shirkley of Hamp ton, Va., and William Robertson of Scotch Plains, N. J. Gladys Morris of Polloeksville and Em mett Morton Jackson were the two charged with driving with out license. Eastern State League Going Strong; Comfort On Top; Weekend Games —>- « The Eastern State Baseball League began its 1949 season on March 18 at Deep Run by elec tion of officers for the current season. .Elected were president, Darris Koonce of Trenton; vice president, Henry Riggs of Cove City; and secretary-treasurer, Mrs. Kenneth Stoddard of Pol locksville. Future meetings will be held the first Friday of each month at 8 p. m. in the court house building in Trenton. The Eastern State League is a fast semi-pro league composed of twelve teams fouring four East ern North Carolina counties. The teams are Comfort, Maysville, Pollocksville, Jasper, Cove City, Dover, Sasser’s Mill, Beulaville, Pink Hill, Deep Run, Falling Creek and Trenton. The league began active play April 30th. A. Koonce. manager of the Branch Bank office in ' Trenton, ran into unexpected difficulties last Wednesday aft ernoon when she was prepar ing some cotton seed oil to use in the cleaning of a 150-year table in her home. The oil was overheated and caught foe. Mrs. Koonce had presence of mind enough in the excitement to throw the burning boiler out of the house and damage was limited to a slight burn on her arm, .the loss of a pair of ny lons and smoke damage to a recently painted kitchen.
