fugitives are bottled up between
Cctttentaea Creek and Neuse
Rivet. Road blocks on all bridfes
across these tank streams are
tightened and alerted. A farm
woman reports that she saw the
car enter the Snow-Hfll-Kinston
highway in the Wooten Cross
road section.‘ Another radio mes

Every road is patrolled aijd
patrolled again. It’s like looking
for a needle in a haystock. Miles
and miles of dht roads criss

and no port is any more filled
with roads than the part of Le

the road check
continues. No luck. Thoys
> of miles have been driven
by the patrolmen. Hundreds of
gallons of gas have been burned.
Several hundred hunches have
been ohecked and then laughed
at when they fall through.
Jimmie
trolmen Remembers a “low fly
ing” truck and for a few min
utes the idea of the fugitives
abandoning the RFD carrier’s
car and stealing mother is toyed
with. Another patrolman sug
gested that “maybe they slipped
through because some of the
fellows were off the air at lunch
time .and failed the get the alarm
until nearly two hours after the
men had flown in the stolen
car.”
Patrolman Clark Teague and
Seth Thomas decide to look be

Grubbs, a farmer, Tommy
Wade informs them that he has
seen two men about a hundred
yards off the county road up a
fire lane. At the tine Wade saw
the men he didn’t know of the
escaped criminals and had
placed no significance upon see
ing them until he bad gotten to
toe *UyS* Watioh and had heard
the story told there. »
Remembering '.the warning
“thefe men are armed and dan
gerous” Teague and Thomas
withdrew to their car to call by
radio for help 'in surrounding
the area. Dark was drawing
near. Again tired patrolmen
and prison guards jumped into
cars and hurried to the spot
where Teague and Thomas wait
ed. Along came the bloodhounds.
The hunt got hot all over again.
But now it was dark and the
dogs for some unknown reason
“didn’t take hold”. /Both of the
fugitives were men:who had es
caped before—one had remained
at large for over 18 years—evi
dntly they had something to
throw th< dogs off their trail.
Rumors flew back and forth.
Every farmer in the neighbor
hood had now seen some "stran
gers”. One dog was running
here. But another was hot on
the trail across the. field. Fresh
tracks were seen in newly plowed
pound At any rate “they were
on the pound now”.

“Can’t tell; Langston had been
to White Lake with another fam

night and had hidden the key
behind the sunshade”
Then « neighbor says, “I saw
Langston’s car leave about 9 o’-*

“Hell,” two dozen patrolmen
say in one fashion or another,
“They could be in Georgia by

Another flash on the radio:
Langston’s car recovered in Ox

car stolen last night in Oxford.
