The cost of a pulmotor is around $800 and Lenoir County is one of the few wealthy counties in North Carolina that-doesn’t have such a machine. We feel that one should be purchased immediately by the city and county and placed in the hands of trained personnel in either the police or fire department The need for such a machine last Wed* nesday .when a Contentnea Neck youth was drowned is the cause for our belated thoughts on the subject ;V,;# S waiting ft*'the deliverance of last Tuesday night surprised tew people and did it in a rather s manner for one who usually has a highly developed “shuck mat tress” bedside manner. He Wound up by beating the utilities—pan- , vate and public—and the Utilities Commission over their already soreheads. Such action is not new in the realm of politics in the South, but it is relatively new in North Carolina, the home of The Dukes. The governor has asked for cooperation and in order to get this coopera tion he has threatened recalling franchises. This is also old stuff. Huey Long was doing ft while Scott was riding dirt roads as a county agent. Generally speaking, barking dogs don’t bite. Dogs that mean business get you-by the scat of the pants and instill respect, fear and forward action in an obvious and clearly understood manner. Es pecially “Big Dogs” like governors of states. We feel that Governor Scott has enough personal and political power to cope with the utili ties and the Utilities Commission without “going to the people” in a rather limp “Fireside Chat”. . ■ Most assuredly we concur in the governor’s assertion that more and more service in the fields of electricity and-telephones is needed in the rural areas of this state* but we feel that more prompt and effective action could-be obtained from less spectacular methods.
