Larkins Jr., director or the fifth annual Jones County Agricultural Fair, announced this week that plans were well on their way toward — for what will un t fair in the history of _ is the fifth consec utive year since the war that the •glen Newton Smith Post No. 154 Of the American Legion has sponsored the “event of the .year” in the county. Again this year a contract has been signed with “The Mighty Page Shows” for midway rides, side shows and various free at tractions. Over a period of years this group of “show people” has come to be recognized as tops from the standpoint of henesty, cleanliness and in their efforts to give good performances in re turn for fair prices. Senator Clyde R. Hoey has ac cepted an invitation to crown the winner of the annual beauty contest which is to be held on the last night of the fair. Al ready many names have been entered in the contest and Lar kins, who lsals? master or cer emonies for this event, is urging that every veteran, civic and so cial club in the county have an entry in this contest. On Friday, October 27th, school children from Jones and sur rounding counties will be ad mitted free to the shows and a ipation and enjoyment. Also on Friday the annual 4-H Club poultry show and sale will be held, in which the top poultry producer will be honored. Pie eating contests, greased pig rac es and numerous other events will bring the school-age child ren up to the highlight of the Friday program which will in clude a two hour concert after supper by the Cherry Point Mar ine Air Base Band. The com manding officer of the air base and his wife will also be hon ored guests of the fair on this night. Thursday will again this year be farm machinery day. A com mittee composed of John H. Pol lock, Denis Loftin, Mack Griffin and W. C. Flowers will be in charge of this event and one of the most interesting and inform ative programs to those who make their living on the farm will be offered by the various companies in Jones and sur rounding counties who sell farm machinery. Prizes for the largest family present will be given Friday af ternoon. The man and woman with the most entries in the fair will receive a special award, newest married couple, oldest married couple, youngest person present, milking contests and a Virginia reel contest all go into making a full week of fun and information for those who at tend the event.
