SOUTHERN 1225 Pollock St. NEW BERN October Best Time To Seed Fall Oats Tests conducted by the North Carolina Experiment Stat&on show that oats seeded in early October produce yields twice as high as those seeded in mid November, according to -W. H. Rankin and O. K. Middleton, ag ronomists for the station. In the tests, seedlngs mr be tween October 1-15 produced 59 bushels per acre, while seedlngs made on November 15 produced only 30 bushels. The agronomists point out that the number of days favorable to soil preparation’is quite limited after November 1. Rain and wet soil, both typical of this period, make late seeding almost impos sible. Late seedlngs also are more vulnerable to early freezes. Variety as well as seeding date is important in producing good small grain yields, say Rankin and Middleton. Atlas 50 and 66 wheat are recommended in Coastal Plain and Piedmont areas and Thome wheat is recom mended In the mountains. Ar lington oats are recommended throughout the State for fall seedlngs. Victorgraln and Ful grain are good early varieties for Piedmont and Coastal areas. As for barley, Colonial and Calhoun are suggested. Nitrogen should be applied to small grain between February 15 and March 15 for maximum re sults. The suggested rate is 30 pounds per acre, which can be obtained from 188 pounds of nit rate of soda, 150 pounds of Cal Nitro of ANL, or 94 pounds of ammonium nitrate. Top-dressing after March 15 is too late to get maximum number and size of seed heads. Tyndall-Wood-Jarman ■i. . 'PiiX /V-:>: " FUNERAL__ D. E.
