A BETTER COUNTY THROUGH IMPROVED FARM PRACTICES TWO NUMBER 43 Home in Venice Township e of Best Preserved in County memories ex : built but the mater and the ..of those who know something of its history piece its ’Si“s~at just over 100 years. It is own that it was standing at the of the War Between The ales, since the late Mrs. Amelia Bhrdee Pridgen, mother of Mrs. J. Carves Poole of Kinston and Mrs. Henry W Cutchin of Rocky Mount, W«s bprn there during the war. Records in the Lenoir County courthouse indicate that Calvin Tucker was perhaps the builder of Hie home since he owned the plan tation until September 18, 1860, When it was sold to Lemuel Bright Hardee, a grandson of Simon Bright, one -of the founders of Kinston. 'Lepiuel Bright Hardee died with out leaving a will and a jury of six men under the chairmanship of Sheriff W. W. N. Hunter and including Calvin Bouse, Hardy Hill, Stephen Moore, Redding W. Pope and Jesse R. Moore divided his estate and gave the home to Hardee’s wife, Susan Elizabeth Jones. This was done on December . the birthplace of his wife. Hie sec ond' “sentimental reason” for Pridgen wanting the handsome old home was the fact that Calvin Tucker was his grandfather. On September 1, 1904, Pridgen and his wife sold the place to the late William H. Heath and at the death of Heath it passed to its present owner. In searching the records con nected with this property one comes upon a name for the swamp that flanks the homesite on the northeast. Peculiarly enough that name has been lost to this genera tion and it is doubtful that anyone in the county today realizes that this swamp was originally named “Losing Swamp”. -- Sheriff Sam Churchill today proudly remembers this fine old home since he was born there dur ing the period when his father, the late Richard 'Churchill; managed the farm for Pridgen. The next time you’re in the neighborhood, slow down and take a good look at one of the older homes of the county that has been kept in good condition and is still as pleasing to the eye a^rhen its Sherriff Brown Tates "le and Patrolman imas last Thurs d” a pair of un . « Who were mak ing' a midnight visit to the Henderson Brothers’ Garage in Amysville. Both of these visit ors "Were nabbed and on Mon day morning after a hearing before Magistrate 1. H. Dixon, they were bound over to the next term of Superior Court in Jones County under $150 bond. The offenders were James A dolph Pollock and Freddie Le wis and they were charged with breaking, entering and larceny. In 1933 only one acre of corn out of each 1,000 in the United States was planted to hybrids. Last year hybrid corn represent ed 77 per cent of the country’s total acreage.
