It is the seat of a considerable. number of Lenoir County families including that of C. W. Howard, prom inent Kinston* wholesaler. The builder of Oils i was fail grandfather. The Howard home ^as liajor General Robert F. Hoke’s head quarters at the last Battle for Kinston in March 1865, jnst 86 yean ago this month. To day it it one of^ the tew landmarks left that were standing at the time of that battle. It is located jnst west of Kelly’s millpond on the Khisfoh-New Bern highway. c*to at New Bern under the command of Jacob D. Cox finally en Kinston but not before a fierce battle at Wyse’s Forks that rumbled and roared across that end of Jones and Lenoir counties for several days. ' Today there is no one alive who was present at that historic encounter. But a great deal can bf told about the battle since it was well decumented and a care ful survey of the hundreds of orders that passed back and forth between the officers on both sides paint a Very clear pic tending from NeuseRoad, which is about where Southwest Creek Christian Church is today around past Caswell up to Brit-* ish Road and then across that to he vicinity of the Old Cobb Home that Is perhaps best known to those of this generation as the King Home. • That old Cobb Home, now the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Otis Humphrey and the old Sam Howard place are two of the few remaining homes that lived through that battle and still look down today on the passing pa rade of history. The Howard Home on the Kin ithwfest Creek was te forces that gained the greatest renown during that last battle of the war In Eastern Carolina. General Hoke was the father of Mrs. W. D. Pollock of Kinston and he was called by Captain Samuel A. Ashe, the great North Carolina historian, “One of Lee’s ablest generals and North Carolina’s greatest sol dier.’’ The overall command of the Confederate forces at the battle of Kinston was held by General Braxton Bragg for whom Fort Bragg Is named and who was at one time commander in chief of Continued on Page 6 Campaign Winners Will Be Announced |Sat. Eure To Speak In Pink Hill April 27 It was announced this week that North Carolina Secretary of State Thad Eure has accept ed an invitation to be the prin cipal speaker at the annual “ladies night” of the Pink Hill Community Civic Club. The speech making is scheduled to get underway in the high school auditorium immediate ly after a dinner that is to be served in the high school cafe teria. Eure is one of the men frequently mentioned as a likely candidate for governor in 1952, but he has not made any public statements on this point.
