crazy. The natives ben nd long
er wont to be great hunters,
proud chiefs or apear-heartag
warriors^They want to be cow
Enough Hollywood fUms have
been shown here ht the native

thusiasm for our western shoot
in-tootln’ prairie doge. A good
number of Gambia's self-styled
cowboys wear star badges with
“Tftxas" and Sheriff” stamped

It is quite common to meet
one of these Africans walking
down a path wearing a "six
gallon” red Stetson hat with a
wooden pistol at his side.
Recently the cowboy rage got
out of hand and the police had
to enforce a little control. Gangs
of natives wearing their badges
and wooden pistols (lacking only
the horses) began to attack in

MILK WITH A

soil, now are livestock-conscious. In 20 years their
herds of milk cows and calves have increased from
279,522 in 1930 to nearly 400,000. This means

These cowboy enthusiasts,
surprisingly enoughs are all
rtult males—some 40 and SO years
old. When a Western film

To put it in the words of one
native, long a student of West
ern movies: “If you ain't a cow
boy in this territory, you don’t
stand a lame coyote’s chance
after dark.”
When, it was discovered that
many of these cowboys work for
British companies, the police
asked the local English residents
to cooperate in suppressing the
more wild aspects of the oowboy
rage. A native could be fired
from his job if the English boss
suspected him of belonging to a
gang that terrorized the neighs
borhood. But because many of
these cowboys intimidated the

English chief to his native em
ployment manager.
“No sir,” would come the ans

looks a little like Mamadoo.” .
And so the Englishman would
just grumble a bit and squint
his eye at the old familiar face
