their future fives.
It is for this reason tjhat the pub

schools—to see that we have good
-teasers, good courses of study,
conscientious administrators, prop
er discipline and adequate room.
The Fallon schools, like others in
the state and nation, are faced
with crowded conditions and too
Httld in the way of additional funds
to do anything about it. Despite this
fact, students from this area al
ways have ranked high scholastical
ly when entering institutions of
higher learning and this is definitely
a mark of credit to our teachers
and educators who make do with
what is provided.
From the Parkersburg, Eclipse,
Parkersburg, fowa:
Those attending the third Annual
Safety Institute in Hew York re
cently heard an expert testify that
the most dangerous room in the
house is the kitchen. This is true
because ct eppHences which often
which are aloe dangerous.
Home - owners were warned
against the use at certain cleaning
fluids, in the kitchen, the'wearing
of frilly thinks by the housewife,
who works near a stove, and the
placing of Inflammable materials
near the range. They were also
cautioned to keep at least one
fire • extinguisher handy in
the kitchen.
We have often observed that the
kitchen could be a very dangerous
place for careless hands. Not only
is there a major danger of bum*
ing, but too afteta there is a danger
that children might somehow lock
themselves inside a refrigerator.
Thus, nf all the rooms he your
house, the kitchen probably de-,
mands more thought and more at
tention from you if you would make
your home as safe as possible. JVTo--t
people unfortunately, think about it
too late.
From The Wall Street Journal,
New Vork City:
Within the Republican Party
there are differences of opinion
but in no case do these differences
represent a wide cleavage on any
matter of principle.
It would be most unfortunate—
for the party for the incoming ad
ministration and for the country—
if personal antipathies were al
lowed to create two Republican
factions bent on warfare rather
than compromise.
Such a situation is certainly sug
gested by the statement of Sena
tor Taft strongly objecting to tne
appointment of Mr Martin Durkin.

Stunts Heifers’ Growth
Research work conducted at
the Mountain Experiment Sta
tion, Waynesville, and at North
Carolina State College during
the past three years indicates
that even well-managed pas
tures do not supply sufficient
nutrients for normal growth by
heifer calves between the ages
of 8 and 12 months.
However, at from 12 to 24
months, they can make normal
growth on well-managed, im
proved pastures during the lush
growing seasons, awarding to W.
R. Murley assistant professor,
and R. K. Waugh, head of the
dairy husbandry section, Depart
ment of Animal Industry at N.

The scientists say that most
dairymen consider the rearing of
dairy heifers after they are 6
months old an easy task, and
actually it is. But this belief
has led many owners to stunt

“Far too, often, dairy heifers
are fed low quality roughage in
winter and are turned on pas
ture and allowed to shift for
themselves during the sum
mer,” according to Waugh and
Mttrley.
The Waynesrille and State
College tests showed that Guern
sey and Jersey heifers, when
turned to pasture at 6, 8 or 10
months of age and allowed no
other source of feed, made slow
growth, gaining at the rate of
only 53 per cent of normal.
When two pounds of grain were
fed to animals of similar ages,
normal growth was attained. On
poorer pastures or for larger an
imals, the grain should be in
creased.
Older heifers, 12 to 20 monhts,
made growth on improved La

tures.
Egg production in November
was 4 per cent larger than No
vember of last year, setting a
new record for the month.
