Among those returning aboard the attack transport UBS Cambria are Paul F. Hawkins, seaman, USN, son of Mrs. Bessie S. Hawkins of Route 4, and Wil lian L. Parker, radioman, first class, USN, son of Mrs. Lillian F. Parker, all of Kinston. The ships left the east coast In January and they served as the amphibious element of the Sixth Fleet in the Mediterran ean. Five amphibious landings were made on foreign shores in cluding two combined opera tions with NATO navies. Extensive gunnery, naviga tional, and operational exercises were conducted during the cruise. The group visited ports in North Africa, Sicily, France, Greece, Cyprus and, Gibraltar. Cultivation has become so much a part of producing row crops that farmers sometimes perform this operation unneces sarily. C By BH£ DHUNGBAM KENYA, AFRICA — British authorities here are now certain that the Mau Mau uprising Is being supported by internation al interests. » ■ i Wtthih the last few days here In Kenya, the Mau Mau have Shown a surprising reserve of force. Guns and ammunition in Increasing quantities are being felt In the native attacks. On one occasion several weeks ago, the Mau Mau raided a police outpost and raced off Into the forest with 50 fifles, 25 sub-ma chine guns and close to 10,000 rounds of ammunition. A re cent show of native force, how ever, Indicates that the Mau Mau has somehow acquired a good many more weapons than can be accounted for by this single big police loss. It Is believed that the riots In the Union of South Africa, the former eruptions on the Gold Coast, and the present open re volt'of 1,250,000 Kikuyu trlbes people are all closely related to the same leadership., It is fairly certain that much of the thinking and organising for the native independence movement Is done by expatriat ed natives who are now living in Paris. Negroes who have studied In London and Paris are in close contact with sympathetic inter ests in. the Gold Coast and Li beria, these latter two states being in the hands of all-negro governments. There are also a number of American negro in tellectuals who have incorporat ed themselves in the cause for native independence. If anyone has interest enough in the matter to make enquir ies, it is not hard to find ne groes in Paris who are well able to predict the exact location of future African eruptions. Quite some time before the Mau Mau ever came to open revolt, word was current among Negro intel lectuals of Paris that Kenya was to be the scene of the next po litical explosion. The British authorities are now acting on the knowledge that they are not just lighting a band of Kikuyu tribesmen. A closer eye is kept on foreign communication. The immedi ate policy is to isolate the prob lem from the outside, and at the same time offer sime concil iatory moves toward appeasing the political demands of the na tives. This is the policy, but judg Ing from the number of people that are swarming out of Ken ya by every available ship and place, the native movement for independence is not being un derestimated by anybody. : 1| has been definitely established that some birds hibernate Ubei ■mammals and reptiles.
