PEACE, ITS WONDERFUL! Wltf T&.I mmm. Act Now To Save Wheat From bisect And Rodent Damage “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure,” when it comes to protecting wheat from Insects, birds, and rodents. The first step in protecting wheat is to get rid of sources of Infestation, and that this action should be taken now, before the crop is harvested. Even a few grains of wheat left over from last year can harbor enough weevils to start a serious infestation. It is im portant to destroy these weevils before this year’s crop is stored because once they gain a foot hold in new grain, their num bers will multiply mpidly and they, are very difficult to stamp out. To prevent this, grain bins should be cleaned thoroughly to remove all bits of grain and dust from corners and cracks. Then walls and floors should be sprayed with an insecticide. For this, we recommend the following: DDT or methoxychlor wett able powder sprays at 2Y2 per cent concentration applied at the rate of 2 gallons per thou sand square feet or surface. Or pyrethrin or allethrin emul sion sprays at 0.5 per cent con centration applied at the rate of 2 gallons per' thousand square feet. The cleanup should "be ex tended to all surrounding areas from which insects can crawl or fly. Feed rooms, small pockets or grain left in machinery, and spilled! grain are common sources of infestation. And during very dry seasons, regular wa tering may mean the difference between good batches of high quality vegetables and little or no crop at all. This extra production may pay for the costs involved in installing the necessary water ing equipment. Farmers who plan to install watering equipment in their vegetable gardens this year Should consider how much gar den can be watered efficiently and econmlcally by their pres ent well and pump system. One inch of wa ter applied over a period of several hours will usually he sufficient to soak the ground to the proper depth. Water should never be applied at a rate faster than the ground can soak It up. To apply the equivalent of one inch of* water to a half acre garden plot in 24 hours of pumping requires a pump with a capacity of about 550 gal lons an hour. Permanent pastures should be top-dressed once each year with 400 to 600 pounds per acre of 0-10-20, 0-9-27, or 0-14-14. Piano^Tuner James G.
